This luxurious, discrete urban resort in Lecce is the labor of love of Giacomo Fiermonte and a tribute to his late Pugliese grandmother and great uncle.

Located a 15-minute drive outside the “white city” of Ostuni—nicknamed for its white walls and primarily white architecture—Masseria Cervarolo occupies a masseria from the 16^th century that has been transformed into a charming boutique hotel. The property opened in 2010 after an extensive five-year restoration, during which the designers added materials from the original masseria including chiancarelle (an Apulian stone) and calcareous stone blocks.

The hotel’s 17 rooms are located in the masseria and eight trulli, which are traditional rural Apulian stone huts with conical roofs. The junior suites occupy two trulli, and the accommodations throughout the hotel feature stone walls and a cozy, rustic charm. The country-chic décor is accented by restored original furniture, embellished fabrics and handcrafted furnishings.

The hotel has several public spaces for guests, including intimate courtyards, cozy alcoves, an alluring living room and a picturesque orangery. Cacti, pottery (much of it is by Enza Fasano), antique geometric patterned tiles and shabby-chic furniture add personality. There is also a restaurant, bar, small wellness center with one treatment room, a large swimming pool and gardens. Masseria Cervarolo also boasts a small church dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrow, the Virgin Mary, and has a polychromatic baroque altar and several original frescos.

The restaurant serves a large breakfast buffet in the morning and offers typical Apulian dishes at dinner. The kitchen offers a weekly cooking class and wine tasting that is complimentary for guests.

Located within the massive San Domenico Golf course, the Masseria Cimino is a charming fifteen-bedroom farmhouse with roots dating back to the 1700s. Surrounded by vegetable gardens and century-old olive trees, Cimino offers fantastic value for guests looking for an authentic masseria ambiance. When it was restored in 2005, the Masseria maintained its original architectural features and certain rooms contain special details such as fireplaces, terraces and balconies. All have basic modern amenities such as air conditioning, marble bathrooms, minibars and flat screen TVs. While guests staying at Cimino do not have reciprocal privileges at Borgo Egnazia (although you can pay a fee to use its beach clubs) or Masseria San Domenico, the property itself has its own restaurant, bar and lounge, small swimming pool and access to the professional 18-hole San Domenico Golf course.

The room rate at Masseria Cimino includes daily breakfast and dinner. Dinner here is particularly lovely, thanks to the restaurant's seasonal menu that changes daily based on what produce is fresh and in season. If Borgo Egnazia is the Melpignano’s sleek and trendy teenager, then Masseria San Domenico is it’s sophisticated older sister. Set ten minutes from Borgo on sixty acres of manicured lawns and orchards, the picturesque and still functioning masseria was the Melpignano’s original summer home. In 1990 the family restored the original 13th century fortified farmhouse and made several additions to the property, carefully maintaining its structural authenticity and sense of place.

With only 47 rooms and suites (and no children under 12 permitted), the concept behind the Masseria San Domenico is that of an adult-hideaway where pampering and indulgence take center stage. Rooms are spacious, decorated in colorful fabrics and with antique furniture and traditional pottery that emphasize Marisa Melpignano’s personal style. Deluxe rooms and junior suites offer patios while many suite categories have views of stunning grounds and Adriatic Sea. The public spaces are very traditional in style and could use a refresh.

The resort facilities are particularly impressive and include an eighteen-hole championship golf course (adjacent), two tennis courts, a large, lagoon-shaped swimming pool, private beach club and two-level thalassotherapy spa – one of the few in Italy. The Masseria also boasts a restaurant serving traditional Apulian cuisine (the dining room dates back to the 1700s). Nearly all of its produce and wine are homegrown and the rest are locally sourced.

Despite its undeveloped surrounds, Masseria San Domenico offers a plethora of activities to choose from, including horseback riding, boating, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, biking and scuba diving. Most guests arrive with grand plans, but couldn’t be more content sipping a glass of prosecco at Spiaggia beach club, a rocky pontoon, covered with chaises lounges and steps from the dark blue Adriatic.** **
