Review

Encompassing the Adriatic and Ionian coasts in the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia is one of the country’s most unspoiled—and unexplored—regions. Opening to much international buzz, Borgo Egnazia is a full-scale resort that brings new attention to this stunning southern corner of Italy.

Located near the small fishing village of Savelletri di Fasano, the resort is set back from the indigo-colored Adriatic Sea, which is partially visible from most of the 63 hotel rooms, 28 three-bedroom pool villas and 93  borgos (translation: family-oriented clusters of one- and two-bedroom houses resembling a traditional Italian village). Borgo Egnazia overlooks the adjacent 18-hole San Domenico Golf Course (where guests receive reduced rates), as well as the nearby ruins of the ancient city of Egnazia.

Architect and owner Aldo Melpignano designed the resort to be a borgo in the style of a traditional masseria (fortified farmhouse), with tall, locally-sourced tufa stone walls. The use of indigenous materials reflects the sense of place that is at the heart of the development, which also hires only local staff and has interiors that were designed by Puglia native, Pino Brescia. Whites, creams and taupe are featured throughout, and the space is tastefully decorated with accents like jars of grain, vintage newspapers and glass lanterns.

Borgo Egnazia is an immensely photogenic hotel, with inviting arches, courtyards and columns that evoke the region's rich history through a hint of Moorish influence. The many alfresco spots invite lounging, especially the split-level main pool area with two enormous pools, a small café/bar and relaxing day beds. This area opens up to the dining terrace of signature restaurant Due Camini, offering a seasonal menu with set options for all-inclusive guests as well as à la carte and kids’ menus. There are, naturally, exceptional regional wines on offer, and a charming sommelier on hand for recommendations. Keen chefs and novices can even try their hand at mastering the chef’s dishes at the cooking school in the village complex. La Frasca, the low-key, more family-oriented restaurant near the pool serves delicious breakfasts with plenty of gluten-free options, as well as pizzas and a full menu of three-course offerings, with cucina povera specialities such as fava e ciccori and fresh-caught local fish.

The resort’s popularity with families is bolstered by a fantastic kids’ club with supervised activities for children ages eight to 13 months in the indoor playroom, adventure playground and kids’ swimming pool. Parents with time off can relax in the 1,800-square-meter Egnathia Spa with its massive indoor pool, treatments in the frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium and special midnight-massage events.

Guests looking to engage in more active pursuits will find everything from golf and tennis to biking and horseback riding for the whole family, as well as a complimentary shuttle to the private beach club, just five minutes away. The beach club is a pleasant place for lunch or to laze away the afternoon (or entire day) and the food is quite good. For day trips, the stunning ancient cities of Lecce, Ostuni, Alberobello and Locorotondo are all less than a two-hour- drive from the resort. The activities in the area are impressive and can be designed around particular passions—from cheese making or winetasting to boating and spelunking.
