Hotel Romazzino Review

This whitewashed resort, part of Marriot’s Luxury Collection, perched above a private beach and semi-obscured by greenery and gardens, boasts ninety-four rooms, including fifteen suites. With its undulating stucco walls and terracotta tile roofs, the Romazzino has a slightly whimsical appearance, a bit like a Mediterranean castle imagined by Dr. Seuss. Inside, the rooms feel traditional with tile floors, white linens and painted wooden furniture that may have been ordered in the 1960s. While it’s hugely popular with families, thanks to the “Toy Club” (for children aged four to nine), kids’ menus, babysitting services and play area, it still feels stylish and adult. At meals, you will see large families dining together with moms decked out in the latest resort wear, even carrying their Hermès Birken bags down to the beach.

As with all of Marriott’s Costa Smeralda properties, drinking and dining are exorbitantly expensive here, but unlike many other jet-set resorts, they take their food seriously. You’ll dine very well on an excellent menu of international and haute Sardinian fare, especially on the terrace of the main restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean. Your children, on the other hand, will love the alfresco barbecue lunches at the beachside restaurant. (Do beware, though, buffet lunch may be $75 a person even if that person is four and eats pasta with butter). The best accommodations on the property by far are the new private villas, which range from 334 square feet to 3,337 square feet. They come with their own pools and butlers and all the latest gadgetry. Unlike the rooms in the main building, which feel very dated, these have been done to the latest standards and include hand-carved wooden doors, Sardinian crafts and artwork, Loro Piana fabrics, even heated flooring in the bathrooms.

Who Should Stay

Those who don’t worry about cost, because as with its sister properties Cala di Volpe and Pitrizza, Romazzino charges prices that make most other Mediterranean five-star resorts look like bargains.
