Guide to Arezzo

Arezzo, formerly a military fort on the Via Cassia, is one of the most historic cities in Italy. The illustrious collection of frescos in ancient cathedrals, the monthly antiques fair and the annual jousting match held in the main square make for an excellent day trip.

Eat

The wine bar La Torre di Gnicchie (Piaggia San Martino 8; 39-0575-352-035) is a fantastic spot right off the Piazza Grande for antipasto and a glass of wine from their enormous cellar. The popular Antica Osteria L’Agania (Via Giuseppe Mazzini 10; (39) 0575-295381) is a bustling place for homemade pastas and fresh, regional cuisine.

Shop

On the first weekend of the month, Arezzo hosts the vast Fiera Antiquaria in the city center. The Italian antiques fair features everything from Murano glass vases to 19^th-century furniture.

See & Do

The main medieval square of Arezzo, Piazza Grande, is lined with the remains of the aristocratic palace and the Vasari Loggia, a façade designed by Giorgio Vasari. It is also the site of the Giostra del Saracino, a jousting event held annually in June and September. Arezzo is home to several highly acclaimed religious frescos such as the Legend of the True Cross fresco at the Basilica di San Francesco, Madonna and Child with Saints at Pieve di Santa Maria and the Mary Magdalene fresco at the Cathedral di Saint Donatus.
