Siena

siena

One of seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the region, Siena’s historic center sees a significant amount of tourism, thanks to its medieval architecture, ornate monuments and biannual Palio horse race. A day or two is all you need to appreciate the city, a mere hour-and-a-half drive from Florence.

See & Do The Piazza del Campo is one of Italy’s most storied medieval squares and Siena’s former marketplace. Twice a year the social and civic center of the city is the site of the Palio, the famous bareback horse race. Art aficionados must visit the Museo Civico to see some of the Sienese School’s most impressive and significant paintings, sculptures and frescoes. The Duomo, Siena’s beautiful cathedral, is also a necessary stop for its fine Gothic architecture and treasures by artists like Donatello and Pinturicchio that fill the interior. The Santa Maria della Scala, a former-hospital-turned-cultural-complex, hosts several history museums. The National Archaeological Museum and the Pilgrim’s Hall (Pellegrinaio) are not to be missed.
