The Urban Resort: Four Seasons Florence

Vibe:

Renaissance grandeur, tranquil oasis, family-friendly

Location: Set in one of Florence’s largest private parks, the Four Seasons is slightly removed from the city center (about a ten-minute walk from the Duomo). Best For: Return visitors who do not need to stay within the historic center; families looking for a serene setting away from the tourist fray with access to gardens and a pool. Book: One of the suites with original frescoes, such as the Presidential Suite at La Villa or the Frescoed Executive Suite. Keep in Mind: Save some time to enjoy the sculpture garden, beautiful outdoor pool and expansive spa.

The Intimate Palazzo: J.K. Place

Vibe:

Boutique, cozy, design-oriented

Location: J.K. Place is centrally located on the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. Best For: Couples and design lovers who will appreciate the discreet entrance, chic décor and townhouse ambience. Book: The Panoramic Loft, with an excellent view of Brunelleschi’s cupola from the bathtub. Keep in Mind: While the hotel lacks the 24-hour service, gym and lobby scene of a larger property, it does offer a central location, Zen-like atmosphere and rooftop terrace.

The Stylish Retreat: Portrait Firenze

Vibe:

Sexy, sleek, centrally located

Location: Just steps from the Uffizzi, Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signora, the waterfront Portrait overlooks the Arno River. Best for: Couples, groups or families with older children who value a private, residential vibe (the 37 suites feel like mini apartments). Book: The Terrace Suites on the fifth and sixth floors. Keep in mind: What the hotel lacks in coddling service and resort amenities (there is no gym or spa on site), it makes up for with its chic design scheme, central location and stellar views.

The Traditional Sophisticate: Hotel Lungarno

Vibe:

Waterfront, service-oriented, centrally located

Location: The property is located on the Arno River at the edge of the Oltrarno district. Best for: Art lovers and those looking for personal, attentive service. Book: The Designer Suite River View, with unparalleled views of the Ponte Vecchio. Keep in mind: Hotel Lungarno houses more than 400 paintings and sculptures—including works by Picasso, Tosi and Cocteau—as well as the celebrated Borgo San Jacopo restaurant.

The Hilltop Oasis: Belmond Villa San Michele

Vibe:

Elegant, historic, family-friendly

Location: The Belmond occupies a converted 15th-century monastery in the hills, located about a 20-minute drive from the center of Florence. Best for: Couples seeking a fairytale hideaway (the al fresco restaurant La Loggia has one of the most romantic views of Florence); families looking to retreat to the heated pool and expansive gardens after a day of sightseeing. Book: The specialty suites in the main building (Napoleon stayed in one during a trip to Italy) or the Limonaia Villa, which can be converted into a three-bedroom villa with a private garden and pool. Keep in mind: Removed from the historic center, the Villa San Michele’s location allows for easy access to the Tuscan countryside for day-trips, and private shuttles run from the property into Florence every half-hour. Travelers may also wish to divide a longer trip to Florence between the Belmond and one of the central city properties.
