How apt that some of the Gritti Palace’s top suites were named for patrons of art and literature—the views of this Grand Canal grande dame are so magnificent that they immediately conjure passages by Henry James and John Ruskin (the latter stayed here while writing The Stones of Venice). The palazzo itself dates to the 15th century, and its long history (the Doge of Venice once called it home) can be felt throughout. An extraordinary 15-month renovation saw hundreds of craftspeople restore every last corner, including Murano glasswork, antique mirrors, artworks, terrazzo floors and Rubelli fabrics. The museum-like interiors of this hotel are offset by a warm, über-professional team who obviously love to share their Venice with guests. At the end of the day, an aperitif al fresco is a must. Housed in a 15^th century building, this iconic property was the successive home of the famous Pisano and Gritti families for hundreds of years before it was turned into a luxury hotel in 1895. During an extensive renovation from 2011-2013, hundreds of expert craftsmen were involved in bringing the legendary property back to its former glory and every detail confirms the property's noble heritage.
