You might find it a peaceful respite from Monte-Carlo shopping fatigue, although you’ll need to drive or take a bus or taxi to get there. For paleontology buffs, there’s also a prehistory museum, exhibiting Cro-Magnon skeletons from the Grimaldi Caves, plus a refreshingly cool stalactite- and stalagmite-filled grotto, formerly a Neolithic dwelling.

This Monegasque disco has been an institution ever since its creation in the 1970s, and it’s still going strong. Its gold décor, bay windows and open-air ceiling are all part of the show. Be prepared to plunk down a considerable number of euros for drinks.

La Villa Sauber in Larvotto

Along with Villa Paloma, Villa Sauber is one of the two contemporary art venues that make up the New National Museum of Monaco. Housed in one of the first Belle Époque buildings in the city (constructed in the early 1900s), the villa was originally home to the prominent Blanc family, known for their role in the Monte Carlo Casino development. The immaculate gardens are ideal for strolling after a visit to one of the rotating exhibits, of which there are two yearly. A popular recent exhibition, Princess Grace: More Than an Image, chronicled the style icon’s enviable wardrobe.

Métropole ESPA

Located on the ground floor of the Hôtel Métropole, the Jacques Garcia–designed ESPA exudes a chic exoticism, from the polished woods and stingray-skin walls of its thirteen treatment rooms to the brown mosaic–tiled hammam. The spa has no windows and keeps the lighting low, creating a soothing atmosphere where time seems suspended. For a special experience, book a three-hour session in one of the two private VIP couple suites followed by a private hydromassage chromotherapy bath. ESPA’s treatments include energy-boosting massages, salt and oil scrubs and hot-stone therapy. Exterior View-Monte-Carlo Casino ,Monaco, Monaco-Courtesy Monaco Press Centre Photos

Monte-Carlo Casino

Designed in 1863 by Charles Garnier, this legendary Belle Époque house of haute gambling still glitters with old-world glamour. Visited in the past by an endless list of royaly, statesmen, writers, artists, movie stars and models—everyone from the Prince of Wales, Prince Napoléon, Baron Rothschild and Winston Churchill to Alexandre Dumas, Anton Chekhov, Colette and Somerset Maugham—the casino continues to attract an elegant international clientele. Patrons plunk down serious money at the European, English, French and American roulette wheels as well as at the blackjack, poker, trente et quarante and craps tables. The bona fide high rollers head for the Salons Privés, four luxurious gaming rooms that are open until 8 A.M. and where the chef will whip up a cheese soufflé for a late-night snack.

Even if you’re not prepared to risk your euros, have a peek at the majestic atrium, bedecked with towering marble columns and ornate bronze candelabras. Should temptation strike, visit the small room of jangling slot machines. To gamble, you must be over 21, and you’ll need to present an identity card or passport at the entry desk. A sports jacket and tie are de rigueur for men and shorts and sneakers are forbidden.

Monte-Carlo Opera, la Salle Garnier

After a costly renovation, Garnier’s jewel box reopened in 2005, its heavily gilded décor (think Second Empire–style lyre-toting angels and an abundance of mythological frescoes and bronzes) restored to its former glory. Even the Lesage gold-embroidered velvet chairs and ribboned mohair curtains that graced the 522-seat concert hall have been reproduced exactly; now, though, there are also tiny lights for libretto-reading fans. Don’t forget to look up, if only to gape at the Grand Lustre, a five-ton chandelier of Bohemian crystal whose missing tiers have been perfectly replicated.

Highlights of the seasonal events include a top-notch opera series, Jazz and pop artists, and performances by the avant-garde Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

Musée Océanographique

This cliff-top aquarium that looks more like a palace than an educational institution is guaranteed to please kids and intrigue visitors of any age. Once headed by Jacques Cousteau, it showcases some rarely seen, bizarre marine life and a bouillabaisse of sharks and compatible creatures circling endlessly in a giant tank.

Palais Princier

Don’t leave the principality without taking in this salmon-pink fantasy, the Grimaldis’s seat of government, built over a 13th-century Genoese fortress. When the white-and-red banner is flying, Prince Albert II is in residence and the palace is closed to the public. But you still can admire the cannons (donated by Louis XIV) and check out the daily changing of the guard, at 11:55 A.M, on the huge square. During the summer months, there are thirty-minute tours of the throne room and the sumptuous state apartments, chockablock with Venetian antiques and frescoes. In the evening, the lovely mosaic courtyard is open to the public for starlit classical concerts. Closed November through May.

Villa Paloma

One of the two contemporary art museums of the New National Museum of Monaco, Villa Paloma is as much a destination for history buffs as it is for art enthusiasts. Built during the early 1900’s, the villa withstood severe damage during World War II. Today the museum hosts two carefully-curated exhibitions each year; a recent show highlighted the work of Russian contemporary artist Erik Bulatov, who developed his graphic, cryptic style to skirt the restrictions put on artists during the Soviet regime.
