Located in the up-and-coming Amsterdam Noord, Hangar opened in late 2015 on a barren stretch of waterfront surrounded by warehouses and car dealerships. However, the restaurant’s beautiful interior design and French- and Italian-inspired menu—not to mention the alfresco terrace overlooking the IJ river—have proved spectacular enough that patrons are making the trek to dine there. Housed in a former hangar, the restaurant is constructed from corrugated iron plates in brown, green and white, and fosters an industrial-chic vibe with marble countertops, an unpolished wooden floor, brass bar and vintage barstools sourced from Paris. Open for lunch, dinner and lounging until late into the night, Hangar serves such dishes as cheese and charcuteries platters, burrata and spring chicken with lemon and salsa verde. During the summer months, there is no better place to relax than on the 20,000-square-foot terrace—a tropical paradise with palm trees, hanging string lights and bean bags.
