The follow-up restaurant to the wildly successful Rijsel, Scheepskameel opened in 2016 on the Marineterrein in an old science school. Formerly owned by the Royal Navy, the up-and-coming area is home to a growing number of tech start-ups and is a recent destination for foodies. Named after the Dutch word for ‘ship’s camel’ (a maritime device dating back to 1690 that increased a ship's buoyancy, allowing it to pass through shallow waters), the restaurant, which boasts a simple, white interior, has a plain décor with the intention of the focus remaining on the food. The menu emphasizes raw cuisine (meat, fish and vegetables), and while the offerings change almost daily, sample dishes include roasted leek with hazelnuts, horseradish and green apple.
