  • The location on the central waterway that runs through Ålesund (guests in some rooms can fish from their windows)
  • The hotel’s elegant Apotekergata No. 5 restaurant, the best eatery in the city
  • The penthouse suite and the hotel room in the nearby Molja Lighthouse (a very unique, if slightly impractical, accommodation)

Review

Located in the heart of the picturesque city of Ålesund, the family-owned Hotel Brosundet occupies two waterfront, historic buildings that served as packhouses during the early 20th century, when the city was a booming fishing destination. Opened in 2008, the property, designed by cutting-edge architecture firm Snøhetta, is a stylish escape in the Art Nouveau port town, and it is the most upscale place to stay within the city limits.

With just 47 rooms when it opened, Brosundet absorbed another building in 2017 and increased its room count to 132. The expanded hotel features a contemporary design throughout, while the accommodations in the original building are defined by exposed beams, frosted glass bathrooms and sharp lines, and the ones in the yellow building have a softer look, with carpeted floors, navy and cream furnishings and high ceilings. In addition to the beautiful two-bedroom penthouse, the most unique accommodation is a room in the Molja Lighthouse, located just a few blocks from the main hotel. Also outfitted by Snøhetta, the impossibly tiny two-story abode has a sleek bathroom and a circular bedroom on the second floor.

The on-site amenities at Hotel Brosundet include a small gym, sauna, bar and restaurant. A buffet breakfast is served daily in the lobby, and coffee and tea is available around-the-clock, which hotel guests can enjoy in any of the many lounge spaces on the ground floor or by the fireplace, which soars four stories. The upscale, seafood-focused restaurant, Apotekergata No. 5, is a must for all visitors to Ålesund, whether or not they are staying at the hotel. Prior to dining, guests can have a cocktail or glass of wine in the sophisticated Brosundet Bar, which features a cool design and copper-topped bar.

Owned by travel company 62 Nord, which also operates Hotel Union Øye and Storfjord Hotel, Brosundet offers an abundance of activities. Guests can take kayaks from the hotel and navigate the city’s waters, or opt for something more thrilling, like a high-speed RIB boat tour to Runde Island, known for its puffin population, or go fishing, hiking or golfing nearby. There is also skiing at the nearby Stranda in winter. A favorite activity is a private boat cruise through the fjords with a stop for lunch at a bucolic countryside retreat.

Who Should Stay

The most upscale base in Ålesund, Hotel Brosundet offers a comfortable place to stay while exploring the city.
