Formed during the Ice Age, the Norwegian fjords have a rare, raw, untouched beauty on par with Iceland, Patagonia and New Zealand. One of the world’s greatest off-the-beaten path adventure destinations, this region is defined by staggering peaks that are punctuated by waterfalls and old farmhouses, and that drop dramatically into blue fjords thousands of feet deep.

    7 Days: Essential Norwegian Fjords

Sprawling and spread-out, the Norwegian Fjords are a classic road trip destination. The best way to maximize your time is to spend a few days touring natural wonders and architectural landmarks by car, and a few days navigating the region by private boat or on a helicopter tour. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

      Days 1-2: Bergen & Sognefjord

Begin your trip in Bergen, the second-largest city in Norway and a good jumping-off point for exploring the fjords. Here, tour the historic wharf with an expert guide, before taking the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for beautiful views. Then, get a dose of culture at one of the city’s best museums. End the day with a meal at Indagare’s favorite foodie hot spot. In the morning, fly or drive to Sognefjord to explore the world’s largest fjord on a RIB boat. Then, take a helicopter to Ålesund.

      Days 3-4: Ålesund

Explore the charming city of Ålesund, which tragically burned down in 1904 and was entirely rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style. Tour the compact port city by kayak, embark on a high-speed RIB boat tour to see puffins and seals, hike Aksla mountain for beautiful views of the city and take a private boat to a remote resort with a fabulous restaurant for lunch. Enjoy dinner in town at the best seafood restaurant and drinks and shuffleboard at a hip brewery.

      Days 5-7: The Norwegian Countryside

From your home base at one of Indagare’s favorite countryside hotels, take day trips into the fjords, including stops at iconic attractions like Trollstigen and Geirangerfjord. Splurge on a helicopter tour one day and see the region in all its shimmering majesty from above. Spend a day or two at your hotel hiking and biking in the wilderness, enjoying delicious farm- and fjord-to-table cuisine and enjoying spa treatments.

“Driving through the fjords was one of the most surprisingly enjoyable travel experiences I’ve ever had. The fjord-side roads are stunning and easy to navigate, and with each turn a striking new landscape is unveiled. You won’t be able to resist stopping every 10 minutes for a photograph!”
