Review

São Lourenço do Barrocal is surrounded by expansive fields teaming with overgrown olive trees, cork oaks and herds of grazing sheep. This 40-room farmhouse resort was the vision of owner José Antonio Uva, who carefully restored his family’s 200-year-old estate over a period of several years. Opened in 2016, the property retains its original whitewashed buildings and features gorgeous tiled roofs and colonial architecture.

The hotel’s overall aesthetic is simple and understated, echoing the resort’s serene, relaxed atmosphere. Accommodations are decorated in a neutral palate, featuring cream-colored, locally woven rugs accented by cobalt blue wooden doors. Rooms are very spacious and bathrooms feature deep soaking tubs, heated floors and all-natural herbal bath products. Beds are plush, with 100% Egyptian cotton linens. Each accommodation has a private terrace with pergola shading that provides lovely views (on a clear night, guests can admire the endless blanket of stars above). There are several suites with private terraces overlooking Monsarez Castle and formal dining areas, plus 16 two-story guest cottages that range from one to three bedrooms.

São Lourenço do Barrocal’s public spaces are cozy and welcoming. The lobby feels like a living room, with a grand bookcase and vintage photographs of the Uva family. The colonial–style bar is tucked around the corner with lovely tropical plants and handsome leather armchairs. Steps from the lobby is the signature spa, featuring products from the Austrian brand Susanne Kaufmann. Its four rooms are decorated with photographs of the Austrian Alps, a nod to the facility’s theme. In a separate building, the elegant, farm-to-table restaurant is decorated with family heirlooms and taxidermy. The brasserie-style eatery serves delicious fresh fish and dishes made with local produce.

The landscape is pristine and guests can take advantage of a variety of activities on property, from horseback riding and hiking to water sports at the nearby Algueva Lake, plus swimming and fitness. There is a wine estate on site which offers tastings.
