Noisy and vibrant, the stalls proudly display fish and shellfish, and purveyors will typically clean and gut your purchases for you as you wait. Visit in mid-August when the entire town gathers for the annual Shellfish Festival.

Known as one of the best golf destinations in Europe, the Algarve boasts a handful of elite courses. The Henry Cotton–designed championship course at Penina is generally thought of as the region's first premier golf course and remains one of its best. Away from the hustle and bustle of Faro, the Jack Nicklaus–designed Monte Rei in Seismerias is ranked among the top 100 courses in the world and is considered to be one of the toughest in Europe. Located in the tiny parish of Almancil, this eclectic church is an architectural dedication to the life of St. Lawrence of Rome. The crowning glory of the structure is the series of gorgeous azulejo tiles that bedeck the walls, all depicting scenes from the life of the Italian saint.

Perched atop the city of Silves, this Moorish castle dates back to the 10th century. Remarkably well preserved, the castle’s main draw is the beautiful art that adorns the walls and gates. Less of a commitment than other castles in the country, the Castle of Silves can easily be visited in an afternoon. For added excitement, climb to the top of the tower–the view is breathtaking.

With over 600 miles of coastline, Portugal is quickly establishing itself as a surfing hotspot. Swells are best in the spring, autumn and winter and can reach well over 15 feet. Within a 20-mile radius of Lisbon there are several great options, but the country’s surf hub is on the western coast centered around Nazare.
