Review

It’s no surprise that the Algarve—a pristine region of sandy beaches and surf towns—is where the acclaimed Martinhal hotel group chose to open its first property in Portugal.

The size of a small village, Martinhal Sagres comprises more than a hundred houses, villas and rooms, along with a spa and relaxation lawn, a kids club and beach. With such a large area, it’s easy to get lost and guests may frequently find themselves exploring the gently sloping grounds with no others in sight. The resort is also delightfully secluded, set beside a mile-long beach, and while the stretch is not private, there are rarely outside visitors.

The balance of luxury and family focus is perfected at Martinhal Sagres and is woven through all parts of the resort. The kids club is large but separated from public spaces, and the restaurants are refined and delicious, while still family-friendly (children and even infants have their own menus). As Dunasoverlooks the beach and serves snacks and fresh fish, while the all-day eatery O Terraço offers excellent Portuguese fare in a relaxed, elegant dining room. Guests may also take advantage of the multiple pools, the spa and sports facilities, plus a variety of activities including windsurfing, horseback riding and golf.

Sagres is the oldest of the Martinhal properties and as a result, some of the resort’s aesthetics appear outdated (especially compared to the newer hotels in other locations). The mid-century design lacks cohesion, and the ever-present child-friendly aspect—from the rounded furniture to the ubiquitous highchairs—can take away from the overall style. The hotel rooms are the most elegant accommodations, and should be booked instead of the villas and houses. Well appointed and modern, these have a prime location next to the ocean and offer the best views.

Who Should Stay
