The specialty of the house, and in fact the only item on the menu at the narrow Bairro Alto counter-service spot, is the pastel de nata. This iconic egg tart pastry has been a cornerstone of Portuguese cuisine since Catholic monks began making them in the 1800s; trying one while traveling in Portugal is practically compulsory. The name of the bakery comes from its former incarnation as a butter store, and the owners have preserved the building’s beautiful Art Nouveau façade. The pasteis are baked continuously throughout the day, served warm and with a dusting of cinnamon and powdered sugar, and absolutely scrumptious. There are several Manteigaria located throughout the city, including one on the famous Rua Augusta.
