Review

In October 2016, the Memmo hotel group introduced a higher level of luxury and design to its collection of well-known trendy boutique hotels, Memmo Alfama and Memmo Baleeira. Tucked away from the bustling street of Dom Pedro V, Memmo Príncipe Real is discreetly perched on a hilltop overlooking stunning views of Lisbon that dramatically change throughout the day as the sun rises and sets. Portuguese architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho and designer and hotelier Rodrigo Machaz have thus created the first five-star boutique hotel in Príncipe Real.

The stylish 41-room hotel strikes a balance of being residential with a modern twist by blending the historic past with its entrepreneurial present. As you enter the hotel through sliding glass doors, your gaze is immediately drawn outdoors, where floor-to-ceiling glass windows lead to stunning panoramic views of Lisbon. The lobby’s interior is equally pleasing, as modern furnishing and winding oak paneling create a comfortable ambience leading to the chic Café Príncipe Real that is tastefully designed and accented with velvet pistachio booths and dark wooden bistro chairs. There is no spa, but a long, sleek, swimming pool awaits, inset on the terrace outside.

The rooms are spacious and minimalist in design, featuring a neutral palette with oak beam paneling, plush bedding with faux-fur throws, Hermès products, 24-hour room service, Bose mini-stations and Smart TV flat screens, a N-espresso machine, and a welcome cocktail of a refreshing port tonic. Premium city view rooms are very spacious and have excellent city views. Note that the terraces attached to some of the rooms are not private; rather, they are a space shared with other rooms. Each room is outfitted with beautiful hand-made felt from the local a Fabrica dos Chapeús. The concierge can organize a complimentary afternoon walking tour to visit the shop and surrounding artisan businesses.

Featuring Portugal’s colonial history and global culinary influences, the Café Príncipe Real offers craft cocktails (you can’t miss the port tonic) and contemporary international dishes with notes from Brazil, Africa, India and Asia.

Memmo Príncipe Real has carefully integrated into the neighborhood with a sleek contemporary design that compliments the neighborhood’s creative spirit and distinct heritage of the royals who once lived there. Named for the Portuguese Queen Maria II’s first born son, Príncipe Real is a very trendy neighborhood with winding streets filled with local artisan shops and charming restaurants set in majestic 19th century buildings. The lobby pays homage to its heritage with a re-interpreted portrait of King D. Pedro V from Winterhalter’s 1854 original, now called the Prince Royal, by Carlos Barahona Possollo. Even if you are only exploring the neighborhood, it is worth dropping by and treating yourself to a cocktail on the terrace.

Who Should Stay

Travelers who appreciate contemporary design and want to explore Príncipe Real. It is not ideal for families with young children who need interconnecting rooms.
