Review

Opened in 2016 as the first urban resort in the Martinhal group, Martinhal Chiado represents a new identity of the acclaimed brand. While the Lisbon property lacks the diverse resort amenities and open spaces of its predecessors (such as in Sagres), the hotel is a cozy and comfortable haven in the Portuguese capital.

Martinhal Chiado consists of 37 apartments, a small lobby and M Bar, the casual café found at all Martinhal hotels. The property is tiny compared to its sister resorts, as the kid’s club and reading room are small spaces off the lobby. Still, the Chiado property packs a lot into a small space, and offers an ideal home base for families visiting Lisbon.

The guest apartments are lovely; each room is roughly equivalent in size and layout, with a few variations. Accommodations are massive, with plush fabrics, palatial marble bathrooms and classic Martinhal bunk beds in either the living room or small extra room. Some bedrooms also have a loft. Walls are decorated with gorgeous paintings, many of which depict Lisbon’s beautiful waterfront.

Martinhal Chiado is named after the neighborhood in which it is located, one of the coolest, most up-and-coming areas in the city. Recently transformed from a gritty quarter to a charming cobblestone district, Chiado is full of narrow roads dotted with chic eateries, trinket shops and miradouros (scenic overlooks). Within easy walking distance is the TimeOut Market and the Praça do Comércio.

Who Should Stay

Like all Martinhal properties, Chiado is best suited to families with younger children. Nevertheless, couples will appreciate the large rooms and great location.
