Stomping grounds of Lisbon’s 1950s buzzy intellectual circle, Belcanto, located on Chiado’s Sao Carlos square, was totally transformed in 2011. With beloved Portuguese chef José Avillez taking over in the kitchen, it wasn’t long before it became a Michelin-starred hotspot for serious foodies. The understated décor (a huge, glamorous chandelier the visual focus) of the restaurant allows diners to totally appreciate what’s coming out of the kitchen—whether it is one of Avillez’s signature dishes like The garden of the goose that laid the golden eggs or Our Grandmother’s rice pudding.
