Sublime Comporta Review

With its rustic-chic allure and unexpected landscape — an enchanted forest to use as a home base for exploring some of Portugal’s best beaches — Sublime Comporta makes perfect sense as the destination’s first luxury hotel.

Owned by husband-and-wife team Gonçalo and Patricia Pessoa, the property is comprised of 14 rooms in its main peach-colored building and nearby annex. On the smaller side, these stylish accommodation are perfect for young couples; each one features floor-to-ceiling windows, knotty wood accents, private terraces and polished concrete floors.

The minimalist all-white decor is jazzed up with pops of blue, recalling Portugal’s signature azulejo tiles. Families and those seeking a bit more space to spread out should book one of Sublime’s recently added 19 free-standing cabanas, which are scattered throughout the property’s 42 acres. These eye-catching structures, designed by Portuguese architect José Alberto Charrua, offer private plunge pools, fireplaces, and spacious decks to take in the landscape.

The grounds feature a massive fire pit, a tennis court shaded by cork trees, an artfully designed swimming pool with the forest as background, and a stylish spa with its own indoor pool. The common spaces are breezy and chic, with comfy white sofas that wouldn’t be out of the place in the Hamptons. On-site restaurant Celeiro, in an elegant space conceived to resemble a rice-storage facilities, serves sophisticated takes on regional cuisine highlighting ingredients from the on-property organic garden, grilled fish from the Atlantic, and local wines. Don’t miss the delicious grilled Alentejo black pork.

Tucked away a few miles from the village of Carvahal, Sublime is a short drive from Carhaval and Pego beaches, and about 15 minutes from the village of Comporta. While Sublime offers bicycles to guests, a rental car is required to get around to the various beaches and restaurants off-property.

Who Should Stay

Travelers with an eye for design will love the property’s compelling architectural choices — even the storage shed in the garden is a thought-provoking structure built from mirrored panels, which reflect the pine trees and purple flowers. That said, sometimes it is clear that aesthetics were prioritized over practicality and user-friendliness.

Primarily a peaceful oasis for couples, Sublime Comporta has become more family-friendly since the addition of its 19 two-bedroom cabanas. Consistent with the region, the hotel takes a hands-off approach to service, and the property is best suited to those who don’t require round-the-clock attention. Anyone in search of full-on pampering should head to more established resorts in France or Italy.
