Review

Originally opened over 125 years ago by Scotsman William Reid, Belmond Reid’s Palace in Portugal has long been Madeira’s preeminent hotel, attracting such famous visitors as Prince Albert of Monaco and Winston Churchill (who painted Madeira’s stunning landscapes from the hotel’s porch). Nowadays, the hotel retains an authentic sense of place with striking ocean views and 10 acres of beautifully manicured grounds, which are filled with native flora.

The grand Belmond Reid’s Palace has 111 rooms and 47 suites, all of which have balconies and traditional interiors with light colors (eggshell blue, soft yellow, cream). While some fixtures and rooms could use a refresh, the lobby and public spaces have been recently renovated and have a lovely palatial feel.

In classic Belmond fashion, the service is warm and attentive. Don’t miss the sunrise jeep tour of the 6,000-foot-high Pico do Ariero, Madeira’s third-highest mountain, followed by a picnic breakfast. On-property, guests can unwind and the spa or three swimming pools, or get some exercise at the fitness center or tennis courts.
