Portugal is a nation that takes food seriously. The Portuguese love to dine out and there are multitudes of fantastic restaurants to choose from, from highbrow gastronomic institutions to family-run hole-in-the-wall joints. Service is lovely and warm but be warned–the lovely appetizers (olives, cheese, bread) that restaurateurs provide without request are added to the tab. Nevertheless, Portugal was recently polled as the least expensive country to eat out in Europe, beating out perennial vacation favorites Spain and Greece.
