Housed in a former golf factory is the stylized, cozy Forgan’s. With newspaper print wallpaper, fishing net accents and moss green velvet chairs, it is an inspired interpretation of Scottish design. Set just around the corner from sister restaurant Mitchell, the hip spot serves similar, but slightly less impressive, cuisine. The atmosphere, however, is decidedly more convivial: family-friendly events like knitting classes and story time are held during the day, while nighttime entertainment can include live performances and ceilidh dancing (a traditional Gaelic dance).

What was once the town butcher shop is now a trendy, charming restaurant with delicious farm-to-table food and a bevy of fine wines. Mitchell delivers a fun setting (and live music on weekends) for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the gourmet market in the front is perfect for picking up charcuterie and cous cous salads for a picnic nearby. For dinner, the cuisine is a touch more sophisticated, but still cozy with dishes like confit pork belly and a chicken and wild mushroom tartine. For little ones, there is a kids menu with reliable hits like fish fingers and mac and cheese.

Rumored to be the spot of Will and Kate’s first date, the cozy North Point Café is a perfect lunch spot, serving soups, sandwiches and scones. Not too many salads on offer—after all, this is Scotland.

On the top floor of The Old Course Hotel is the elegant and formal Road Hole Bar, which serves an impressive menu of whiskey in a room that looks and feels like your grandfather’s den.

This hotel restaurant, located in a Gothic townhouse, offers some of the best views in St Andrews. With a tony location on the Scores, the dining room at the Russell looks out onto Castle Beach and the craggy bay. The menu is Scottish with a twist; Shetland Bay mussels with a Southeast Asian spin are equally at home as the grilled St Andrews lobster.

A surprisingly charming gem among the maze of boutiques that cater to visitors in Tian Zi Fang (a fun neighborhood to explore, nonetheless), Taste features a minimalist design that shows off its curates finds including leather clutches, home goods, bath products and jewelry. Featuring sleek cement walls, the two-story shop also has a café where shoppers can linger.

The Adamson flourishes under the guidance of Scott Davies, a finalist on Master Chef in 2013. The upscale spot resides in the town’s former post office, and is one of the most elegant offerings in St Andrews, perfect for a special occasion. There is a daily set menu with two or three courses, as well as an a la carte menu serving “Adamson Favorites,” like sweet potato and cheddar gnocchi with artichoke, and confit lamb with cauliflower cheese puree and braised lettuce. It is a must for serious foodies, but families will also find a well-rounded kids menu and plenty of options for picky eaters. The cocktails are also creative and well executed.

Housed in a whitewashed cottage that was once the stationmaster’s lodge, the Jigger Inn is rife with St Andrews’ rich history. Just steps from the 17^th hole, the walls are covered with golf memorabilia from days gone by, and the bar menu is heavy on aged Scottish whiskies. If you’re visiting during the summer, be sure to sit on the restaurant’s patio, where you have a front row seat to the golfing action.

Arguably the best restaurant in Scotland, The Peat Inn occupies a farmhouse about a 20-minute drive from town, but the ambience and incredible food make it worth the trip. This Michelin-starred restaurant is also an 18^th century inn with rooms located upstairs.

Come for the breathtaking view as much as the delicious seafood. Overlooking—and overhanging—the sea, this beautiful glass and steel structure is one of St Andrews’ best eateries. The predominantly fish and shellfish menu is accompanied by one of the best wine lists in the region.
