Review

The modest building that is home to the Cotton House Hotel belies what awaits guests inside. From the unpretentious, lovely lobby to the beautiful staircase, the Cotton House reveals its treasures slowly. Its beauty continues into the rooms and suites, which are equally serene and well appointed. Formerly the private home of the wealthy Boada family in the late 1800’s—and later the site of the Cotton Textile Foundation—the historic property highlights a cotton motif is used throughout as a central design theme.

The hotel’s designer, Rosa-Violán, kept most of the original elements of the building, including hand-painted, frescoed ceilings, inlaid wood paneling and the show stopping main staircase topped with a chandelier, but there are also modern elements incorporated. The refurbished bar and Mediterranean restaurant with a large, welcoming outdoor space is the ideal lively spot for a glass of wine or dinner after a day of shopping on the nearby Passeig de Gracia.

The 83 rooms and suites, some of which boast terraces, are fresh and bright and, unlike the public spaces, not heavily designed. The accommodations are decorated in a soft palette and the beds are made up with 300-thread count mercerized Egyptian cotton sheets. While the room categories are quite small, the five suites are striking, and those looking to splurge should reserve the luxurious Ottoman or Damask Suites, complete with frescoes on the ceilings and wonderful design accents like wood-paneling and four-poster beds.

The hotel shares a spa with the nearby El Palace hotel, and there is a small gym.

Who Should Stay

Couples looking for a romantic getaway, design aficionados or those looking for a laid-back vibe and respite from the very busy Passeig de Gracia area.
