Review

From legendary entrepreneur and hotelier Ian Schrager, the Barcelona EDITION offers modern luxury with a focus on sustainability. Situated in El Born, both the historic heart and creative hub of Barcelona, the hotel is adjacent to the iconic Santa Catarina Market (famous for its tile roof, which is meant to evoke the vibrant colors of the fresh produce inside) and just a short walk from the Gothic Quarter and landmarks such as the Picasso Museum, Palau Güell and the Basilica de Santa María del Mar.

The contemporary building, rising ten stories and featuring a reflective glass façade, welcomes both guests and locals into its intimate lobby, with a sapphire Eric Schmitt chandelier, furniture designed by various Catalan masters and an abstract black marble and walnut reception desk. Alongside Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán, Schrager has created a simple, sophisticated space meant to serve a gathering place for socializing, working, dining and, of course, sleeping.

The 100 rooms and suites showcase the typical EDITION design: walnut paneling, gray carpets, crisp white bed linens, large windows, faux-fur throws and modest local influences, such as embossed Spanish leather headboards. The bathrooms were crafted with white Sivec marble and contrasting brass hardware, featuring Le Labo amenities. Accommodations include two gorgeous penthouses, complete with private terraces with lounge areas and dining tables.

The all-dayBar Veraz offers a Mediterranean menu with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. The Punch Room, a reincarnation of The London EDITION’s award-winning bar and lounge, is accessed by a spiral staircase off the hotel lobby and offers an extensive menu of punches and cocktails with a Castilian-style billiard table and black granite fireplace. The speakeasy-inspired Cabaret is a restaurant-cum-cabaret show located in the basement of the hotel. Most popular during the summer months is the daytime gathering place, The Roof, located on the tenth floor of the hotel with lush landscaping, a cocktail bar, a small plunge pool and panoramic views over the city, where guests nosh on light Latin American- and Asian-inspired plates.

The gym, though not particularly large, is well-designed with state-of-the-art equipment and a wellness and meditation space.

Indagare Tip

The rooms run small, so we recommend booking a higher room category than you typically might or opting for a suite, if you prefer additional space.

Who Should Stay

While the EDITION brand’s young clientele will be very happy here, the hotel’s sophisticated ambience and attentive staff make it a great option for most travelers wanting to stay within the city center, though it is best suited for couples or families with older children, as there are not many connecting options and the rooms only have king-sized beds.
