Amphorae, jewelry, statues and coins belonging to visitors to the island 3,000 years ago are displayed in a Gothic former chapel.

Ibiza has a wealth of beaches, ranging from small coves to expansive white-sand stretches (some of which turn into party scenes during the high season). One of my favorites is Cala d’Hort, a small sandy cove on the southwest coast. It’s an Ibicenco landmark for its wonderful view of the fabled Es Vedrà, the limestone boulder that juts from the sea and is reputed to have magic powers (according to some sources, Odysseus encountered the Sirens at Es Vedrà; more modern adventurers have frequently reported UFO sightings here). Expect a crowd, especially at sunset. You can also rent a small boat, no license required, to get a closer look at the rocky isle and its resident goats and falcons.

There’s also Benirràs near Sant Joan, a pretty, sandy cove in the north famed for bongo drumming at sunset and a family-friendly atmosphere; S’Aigua Blanca in Sant Carles, a Zen spot and a favorite of tai-chi enthusiasts and nude sunbathers; and Es Cavallet in Sant Jordi and trendy Platja de Ses Salines, near Ibiza town, is where the bronzed jet-setters flock. Cala Jondal is as beautiful as the crowd it attracts surrounded by pine forests and jagged cliffs.

The best rocky coves are: Cala d’en Serra in Portinatx; Es Portitxol in Portinatx; Pou des Lleó in Sant Carles, Sòl d’en Serra in Santa Eulària and Cala Garbo in San José.

No visit to Ibiza is complete without a stroll around the UNESCO World Heritage site Dalt Vila (high town). Within the city walls lie winding streets, multi colored townhouses, old fortresses (some being made into hotels) and the stunning cathedral.

The tiny island of Formentera makes for an excellent day trip from Ibiza. With over 20km of beaches, Ibiza's sister isle is beloved as a more low-key, nature focused retreat. Right on the 7km long Mitjorn Beach, Gecko Beach Club (www.geckobeachclub.com) is one of the bigger hotels with great facilities. Gecko offers a good restaurant and fabulous cocktails, both served in the most stunning beachside location. Opened in 2012, Es Mares (www.hotelesmares.com) is a chic boutique hotel with a great spa. The property is perfectly placed to stroll around the charming little village of Sant Francesc. Situated on the world famous Illetas beach, Beso Beach (www.besobeach.com) offers really delicious food. Don’t miss the Carbiniere prawn paella or the chuleton, (one of the owners is from Galicia, the land of incredible Spanish beef.) After 7pm the tables are cleared away, sundowner mojitos are served and everyone starts dancing in the sand. Under the watchful eye of manager Alessandro, Chezz Gerrdi (www.chezzgerdi.com) serves wonderful Italian food on the Es Pujols side of Formentera. The restaurant offers stunning views back to Ibiza. Its menu offers super-thin and crispy pizza, exquisite pasta, inventive fish dishes and fabulous homemade ice cream. The restaurant is a great place for families.

For those who want a delicious prepared picnic for their boat or beach trip, there is a service called Picnic Nautica, which will deliver food to your boat or villa. Specialties include antipasti, including Ibizian Serrano, manchego and cabra cheeses with local breads, and the Nautica salad with lobster.

Some of the best-preserved objects from the Punic necropolis, which the Phoenicians established in the 7th century B.C., are exhibited alongside approximately 3,500 tombs carved into the rock. Closed Monday.

Die-hard history buffs should visit the remains of Sa Caleta, on the southern coast of the island, a Phoenician settlement that dates from the 7th century B.C. Others may prefer a leisurely swim at nearby Sa Caleta beach, a lovely little creek surrounded by rust-colored clay cliffs, where there’s also a great beach fish restaurant, Sa Caleta, known for its paella.

Just south of the airport is one of the not-to-be-missed natural parks: a huge expanse of shimmering salt flats, the “white gold” excavated by the Carthaginians. Bird-watchers should follow the Cap des Falco path through the marshes for a peek at pink flamingos and other migratory birds.

Snorkelers love the small, protected area of Benirras at Sant Joan on Ibiza’s northern tip for snorkeling and tanning.
