Owned by the same family that operates Hotel Orfila—Madrid’s only other Relais & Chateaux property—the Heritage Madrid Hotel opened its doors in May 2018. It’s located on a fairly busy intersection, but the minute you step inside, you’ll be enveloped by a perfectly quiet and beautiful refuge. It’s like returning to your chic Madrid home, where the bellhop quickly becomes the doorman you’ve known for the last 20 years. 

The hotel is set in an early 20th-century Belle Epoque building that was entirely gutted and refurbished. It has a magnificent collection of antiques and European artwork from the 18th and 19th centuries—everything from the tableware in the restaurant to the paintings that adorn the walls, and much of it sourced directly from the owner’s family. With only 46 rooms, including seven junior suites and eight suites, the property feels intimate and familial, with high-touch, friendly service. The design perfectly blends European charm and contemporary comforts—and the hotel's common areas do the same. At turndown service you are given a massage gel for your feet, which is just what you need after a long day of touring. 

You’re not going to find a grand lobby and entrance at The Heritage—likewise a gym or spa, but if you’re the type of person who loves boutique hotels and that "at home’" feel when you’re traveling, you won’t notice. The receptionist acts as a full-service concierge and can make any reservations or recommendations you may need during your stay. The hotel is home to the elegant, fine-dining restaurant Haroma, whose menu was created by lauded chef Mario Sandoval (breakfast is also served here). Right off the lobby, The Hall of Mirrors—done up in lots of marble and leaf-print banquettes and chairs—is the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee or an afternoon cocktail or tea. In fact, the hotel has a fantastic tea program that offers an authentic British afternoon tea service, as well as a lead bartender who is an expert in making tea mocktails.

But the true highlights are the beautiful rooftop terrace with lounge chairs and a solarium (reserved only for in-house guests), as well as the seventh-floor terrace, which feels like a secret garden complete with a 19th-century French fountain and bar. 

This hotel is best for couples and families with older children, and for those who don’t mind driving to reach more heavily touristed areas.
