Mallorca, Spain: Where to Stay, Eat, What to Do and More

Occupied over the ages by Moors and Christians, German sun worshippers and royal entourages, the Spanish island of Mallorca is a chameleon, reinventing itself from century to century. Its dramatic landscapes and rugged coves have drawn international celebrities since the early 19th century and today attract travelers in search of glamorous but relaxed vacations.

Who Should Stay

Those interested in active pursuits (the lush landscapes provide excellent hiking), as well as Champagne sipping and time spent wandering the labyrinthine streets of Palma, Mallorca’s charming capital city.

Stay

With its relatively large size and topographic diversity, Mallorca accommodates a large variety of luxurious hotels, from elegant countryside retreats like La Residencia and Castell Son Claret to sexy coastal properties like Cap Rocat and trendy urban refuges like Sant Francesc. We recommend splitting up your time and staying a few nights inland and a few by the ocean.

Eat

Mallorca’s restaurants all benefit from the bounty of local produce—including oranges, lemons, almonds and olive oil—and seafood, prawns, in particular. Diners should sample a mix of trendy restaurants, such as Simply Fosh and Tast Club, plus local eateries like La Bóveda and Patrón Lunares. For an alfresco lunch, Ca's Patro March (where the series The Night Manager) was filmed, can't be missed (16 Carrer Sa Cala Deià).

Shop

Palma’s cobblestoned pathways and wide boulevards are lined with shops selling such treasures as local honey, olive oil and fine housewares. Among our favorites: design havens Rialto Living and Estilo Sant Feliu. And don’t leave Mallorca without a pair of espadrilles, sold in seemingly every store in the capital.

Island Secret

While in Palma, visit its oldest gelato parlor, Ca’n Joan De S’aigo, for homemade gelato and delicious ensaïmades: flaky pastries made with a variety of sweet and savory fillings.
