Review

Perched on the rocks overlooking the town of Port Sóller, the Mediterranean coast and Tramuntana mountain range, the Jumeirah Port Sóller proudly celebrates its location—while remaining slightly removed from the action. The imposing property sits atop a ridge, looking slightly out of place among Mallorquin vistas of rolling hills and ancient stone manses that blend into the landscape. However unlike other hotels that might boast more authentic Mallorquin architecture, the hotel delivers a full-service and state-of-the-art experience to guests, with spectacular pools, a massive spa and multiple excellent dining venues.

The décor leaves a bit to be desired, with design elements that do not feel Mallorquin (or even Spanish) but rather standard issue and vaguely corporate. The views are meant to be the artwork in each guest room, and they do not disappoint. Whether rooms face the Mediterranean, the town of Port Sóller or the Tramuntana mountains, huge pane-glass windows celebrate the hotel's surroundings. Other in-room amenities include Nespresso machines, large terraces with double chaise lounges and luxurious bathrooms with more floor-to-ceiling windows. Of the 120 rooms and suites, there are two definite favorites: the Lighthouse suite, which boasts a private terrace and the Observatory suite that has spectacular views of the sea, town and mountains.

Where the property falls short, however, is in its lay-out; it is made up of a confusing rabbit warren labyrinth of eleven separate white stucco buildings connected by rambling pathways and stairwells. On my recent visit, to get to my room on the third floor, I had to take an elevator to the second floor, walk down a corridor, up stairs, down more stairs and then back down another corridor. The property takes pride in its LEED certification and does a good job of incorporating its surroundings and local flora, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was on a cruise ship, complete with boxy rooms placed side-by-side, flush against the coast.

The hotel is popular with families with teenagers, as the town of Port Sóller is a 10-minute walk (or a two-minute cab ride) away, and is filled with fun cafés, bars, clubs and restaurants. Jumeirah Port Sóller's Cap Roig restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and serves delicious and refined Mediterranean cuisine. Specialties include dishes incorporating the local ingredients like almonds, citrus, olive and seafood, and prawns in particular. There is also a great pool bar, ideal for lunch and daytime snacks with outdoor seating and stunning views. The massive spa could occupy a wellness maven for at least an entire day, and the treatments are excellent, provided by thoughtful therapists. In addition to the ten treatment rooms, there is a relaxing outdoor hydropool and high-tech hydrotherapy suites.

Who Should Stay

Families with kids of all ages, including teenagers (who love the easy access to Port Sóller, and younger kids who will be happy in the Kids' Club).
