Located about an hour by car from northern Sweden’s Luleå Airport and nine miles from the nearest town, the remote Logger’s Lodge is surrounded by otherworldly boreal forest and situated next to Bodtraska stream, which was once used by loggers to transport timber to the sawmills on the coast. Built in 1942, Logger’s Lodge was originally a cabin that sleep 16 loggers; now, it’s a special one-room hideaway for travelers looking for an authentic, tailor-made experience. They have also built a second cabin for an additional couple or to provide space to sleep a family, though the property is still available only for buyout.

Owned by two childhood best friends, Eric Borg and Jörgen Drugg, the 550-square-foot Logger’s Lodge cabin is centered around a wood-burning fire and split into a bedroom and dining room. The rustic-chic décor features handmade Swedish furniture like sheepskin-covered Lamino chairs, art from local artisans, brightly colored woven rugs and reindeer hides. The cabin has a small mudroom and bathroom, but the shower is located a few seconds’ walk away from the cabin. Dedicated to ensuring Logger’s Lodge is sustainable, Eric and Jörgen have done what they can to minimize its carbon footprint, including using repurposed wood and nails, offering only organic bath products, developing systems that cut down on water use and avoiding activities that pollute the environment.

Activities at Logger’s Lodge are tailored to guests’ preferences, and popular winter activities include snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, ice fishing, dog-sledding, downhill skiing, Northern Lights photo safaris and snowmobiling. Travelers that want to engage with the local people can have lunch with a former Sami reindeer herder who left home with just his Nordic skis and backpack to carry on the family business. In the summer, diversions include fishing, hiking, white-water rafting, picking berries to make into jam, boating in the midnight sun and more. Patrons of the lodge also have access to a wood-fired sauna and outdoor Jacuzzi, the latter of which is perfect for late-night stargazing.

The culinary program at Logger’s Lodge is headed up by Jörgen, who serves delicious, traditional Swedish cuisine. A typical dinner here will begin with calix caviar served over toast with onion, crème fraiche and fennel, continue with a reindeer steak or moose meatballs with mashed potatoes and end with vanilla ice cream and cloudberries.

Couples who want a secluded, romantic home-base from which to explore Swedish Sápmi. Logger’s Lodge is best for flexible travelers as the bathroom is small and guests need to walk outside to access the shower.
