Glacier 3000
A 30-minute ride from downtown Gstaad will get you to the bottom of Mount Col du Pillon and from there, the gondola to the top of the glacier takes about 45 minutes. In addition to great skiing (trails are open November – May), the area offers a variety of activities including hiking trails, cross-country skiing, a snow park, and dog sled rides. At the summit, sporty and chic skiers dressed in fashionable snowsuits congregate over drinks in front of spectacular views at Restaurant 3000 and the Refuge l’Espace.
Golden Pass Train
The Golden Pass Line runs between Montreux and Zweisimmen and features three different kinds of luxury trains that travel in the mountain passes and afford beautiful views along Lake Geneva. The “Panoramic” train features large windows, the “Classic” train has Belle Époque coaches and a wine-tasting cellar coach, and the “Chocolate” train, which runs only May – October connects with a bus that transfers you to a tour of the Gruyères castle, a demonstration at a cheese dairy, and onto the chocolate factory.
GreenGo
Ever since it opened in 1971, this cocktail lounge/dance club in the basement of the Palace Hotel has been the place to party in Gstaad. Roger Moore, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, Richard Burton, Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly have all danced at this legendary nightclub. Although GreenGo underwent a facelift in 2006, the décor remains true to its 1970’s roots—the signature green carpeting, shimmering orange chandeliers, and clear dance platform extending over an illuminated pool make it the perfect setting for a decadent disco dance party. There is bottle service at the tables and cocktails are extremely expensive—even for Gstaad.
Igloo Village
Rebuilt at the top of Saanerslochgrat Mountain (1900 meters above sea level) every season, the igloo village is made entirely of snow and offers a unique alpine experience. Overnight guests are treated to dinner and breakfast in the igloo village and a cozy night inside igloos decked out with ice-sculptures, lambskins and expedition-grade sleeping bags. The village even features a sauna and whirlpool.
Sleigh Rides
Horse-drawn sleighs that carry six to nine people can be organized directly through the small family-owned and operated company, Kutscherei Reichnbach. Offering a variety of routes and landscapes, this is a great way to take in the winter wonderland that is the Swiss Alps.
