This relative newcomer to the Saanenland scene is getting rave reviews from locals and tourists alike.

This restaurant in the town of Gsteig (about a fifteen-minute drive from Gstaad center) serves up authentic food and is a local favorite. The chalet where the restaurant is housed was built in 1756 and has been classified as an historic monument. The kitchen’s specialty is a decadent fondue bourguignonne.

The Kübli family has owned and operated this quaint mountain top restaurant for 50 years. The cozy traditional Swiss décor (red-and-white-checked tablecloths and cowbells hanging from the ceiling) and large menu featuring hearty regional specialties (fondue, rösti, sausages,) as well as a variety of personal pizzas, salads, and soups, makes this a great place to stop and refuel during a day on the slopes.

This cozy Italian restaurant in the basement of the historic Olden Hotel in the heart of downtown Gstaad is known for its special spaghetti sciué scuié—a simple but fabulous sauce of garlic, basil, tomato and spicy red pepper—and its celebrity clientele. The glasses behind the bar hand-painted with names such as Frank “Blue Eyes” Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, and Valentino are testament to La Cave’s famous regulars. Richard Burton used to throw large parties in the restaurant, which was once a bowling alley. Now owned by Bernie Ecclestone of Formula One fame and fortune, Le Cave is still often reserved for fabulous private events.

This family-run restaurant in Rougemont, a favorite dinner destination for the younger Gstaad set, occupies a chalet-style building that used to be a finishing school where princess Di studied. A homey menu that changes daily and is hand-printed on a chalkboard complements the rustic chic décor featuring long wooden tables and benches with shearling cushions. Although there is a strict no reservation policy, it is rumored that the concierge at the Alpina Gstaad can call ahead to arrange for a table.

The first European outpost of MEGU (which has locations in New York, Moscow, Doha, Mumbai, and New Delhi) serves modern Japanese cuisine that is as beautifully presented as it is prepared. The menu features Kobe beef and an inventive selection sushi and sashimi combinations. The crispy asparagus and MEGU oriental salad make excellent vegetarian options.

The design elegantly infuses Japanese decorative elements into the Swiss style of the Alpina Gstaad hotel. A gorgeous carpet suggests a Zen rock garden, slatted wood room-divider features a carving of Mt. Fuji, and red lacquered chairs—which are modeled on the Torii Gates—subtly conjure the Japanese landscape and aesthetic. In a nod to the Alpine mountain setting, custom-made chandeliers look like blue tinged icicles hanging from the ceiling.

Established in 1823, the oldest restaurant in Gstaad once served as the town’s post office and has been a hotel since 1922. During lunchtime this popular place is filled with a mix of hungry skiers, tourists, and locals sitting under wall-mounted steinbock skulls while filling up on regional specialties like rösti (a hearty dish of grated and fried potatoes.)

Set between the peaks of the Les Diablerets at 9,383 feet above sea level in the Glacier 3000, this restaurant affords incomparably breathtaking views. The limited menu includes typical mountainside fare like sausages and various melted-cheese dishes as well as more gourmet options like risotto with morels. There is also a nice list of wines, beers, and hot beverages.

Less than a fifteen-minute drive from downtown Gstaad, this cozy restaurant in the French-speaking town of Rougemont is a charming and low-key spot for great fondue. Housed in a chalet that is over 300 years old, the restaurant itself has been around since 1958. In the evenings diners are treated to live music performed by a pianist and harmonicist. There are two dinner services at 7pm and 10 pm.

Its prime location on the main drag (the Promenade) makes this popular Italian restaurant a good spot for people watching. The wine list is extensive (and expensive!) and there is a lively bar scene in the evenings.

This cozy restaurant in the cellar of the Hotel Gstaaderhof in downtown Gstaad specializes in fondue and raclette.

This trendy restaurant/bar opened in 2012, taking over the old T bar station at the top of Mt. Eggli. The décor—Swarovski encrusted deer skulls, dark fur window sashes, and shiny black chandeliers hanging from pine ceiling beams—brings an artsy youthful edge to Alpine-chic. The menu ranges from gourmet light snacks (soups, salads, quiche) to decadent treats such as truffle fries and a signature sno-dog, which is basically a hotdog bun filled with fondue cheese.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the main dining room at the Alpina Gstaad offers cuisine from all regions of Switzerland in a chic upscale setting. The décor is elegant, but understated—trophy “animal heads” made out of various cutlery by British artist Ann Carrington are the main wall decoration—allowing the view of the Bernese Oberland mountains to take center stage. On a recent visit, the chef’s evening tasting menu centered on an incredible veal trio (each medallion prepared differently) served with Jerusalem artichoke, chestnuts, and Brussels sprouts. The vast wine selection features an astounding 400 labels.
