Review

Set in one of Bern’s famous covered shopping arcades—nearby shops include the upscale chocolatier Beeler and the Swiss department store Globus—the historic Hotel Schweizerhof commands a central location at the edge of the medieval city center, within walking distance of the Bern train station and such Old City sites as the Clock Tower, the Cathedral of Bern and the Bundesplatz (“Federal Square”). The 160-year-old hotel, which even served as a filming location for the 1969 James Bond film *On Her Majesty's Secret Service*, reopened in 2011 after an extensive two-year renovation.

The hotel’s 99 rooms span five floors and come in a variety of categories, including options with kitchenettes and one-, two- or three-bedroom suites ideal for families or groups. The décor is sophisticated, subtle and contemporary, and the particularly luxurious bathrooms feature rain showers and Bulgari amenities. Public spaces include a lobby bar and lounge, a cigar lounge and the first-floor restaurant Jack’s Brasserie, offering an old-world European ambience and a menu of French brasserie fare and local specialties, including the famous *wienerschnitzel*. In the warmer months, the rooftop Sky Terrace restaurant is open and features panoramic city vistas. During the winter, the roof terrace plays host to the pop-up “Tubbo,” a heated, glass-enclosed tube where guests can savor mulled wine and chestnuts, as well as traditional Swiss delicacies such as fondue and raclette, while still enjoying the views.

The Schweizerhof houses a 5,400-square-foot spa, encompassing a 24-hour gym, five treatment rooms, a sauna, a hammam and an indoor pool. The hotel has also adopted a strong sustainability focus: Guests can choose to make their stays “climate-neutral” (with reduced carbon emissions), and an in-house environmental task force is dedicated to making the property more eco-friendly through initiatives such as repurposing food waste in the kitchens.
