Interiors of Bedroom at B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa, Zurich, Switzerland

B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa

In 1880, the Hürlimann Brewery was the largest in Zurich, sitting on 16 acres of property a few miles from the city center. Today, the brewery’s former grounds are home to a few shops, Google’s European headquarters and the B2 Hotel. In 2012, the 60-room hotel opened in a fully renovated space that incorporates original materials into its eccentric furnishings. The lobby, which features exposed pipes and brass lights, is decorated with antique maps, brewery blueprints and wooden beer crate tables. The Wine Library lounge boasts over 33,000 books, stacked high along one wall up to the 50-foot ceiling, and illuminated by enormous blooming chandeliers crafted from glass beer bottles. Breakfast and a small snack menu are available in the library lounge where guests can peacefully work, read or gather.

The offbeat details of the hotel are balanced by the clean lines of Scandinavian minimalism in the rooms, which are outfitted with wide oak panel floors, white bedding and minimal decorative touches. The bathrooms feature glass walls and full cityscape views are visible from the rainfall showers. The Thermal Bath and Spa offers indoor baths and a rooftop pool with panoramic views of the city.

Baur Au Lac

The Baur Au Lac, founded by Johannes Baur in 1844, has played host to notable financiers, intellectuals and celebrities throughout its nearly two centuries in operation. In fact, Alfred Nobel first conceived his idea for the Nobel Peace Prize in one of the hotel’s salons.

Set within its own park, the landmark property has views of Lake Zurich and the Alps, and provides some privacy from the busy Paradeplatz financial district and main shopping street, Bahnofstrasse. The meticulous lobby restoration, completed in 2022, along with the buzzy new dining at Baur's Bar, the seasonal Terrace Restaurant, Winter Fondue Chalet and addition of 80,000 resident bees at their onsite apiary has turned this classic property into a destination for visitors and locals alike.

The 120 spacious and refined rooms are individually decorated in Art Deco, French Louis XVI and English Regency styles. Enormous fresh floral arrangements, valet parking, around the clock car and driver services, heated floors, marble bathrooms and the finest Italian fabrics are a few of the amenities that have earned the Baur Au Lac its repeat clientele.

Exterior View : The Dolder Grand, Zurich, Switzerland

The Dolder Grand

Driving up the winding streets of Zurich’s suburbs, the Dolder Grand seems to suddenly appear between the parting of evergreen trees. The regal turrets and spires belong to the original castle-like hotel, which has housed the likes of Arturo Toscanini, Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, the Rolling Stones and Winston Churchill since it opened in 1899. The main house is now extended on both sides by Norman Foster’s contemporary wings, which were erected during a $450 million renovation in 2008 that lifted the property to one of the best in the world.

Sleek Bentleys and Maybachs line the sweeping, red-carpeted hotel entrance where guests are met by the attentive staff. Large oak and glass doors open to reveal the opulent lobby and a few paintings from the Dolder’s extensive collection. The gold-plated elevators lead to the hotel’s four top suites, each modeled after celebrities who have frequented the hotel: Suite 100 is an ode to The Rolling Stones and the Maestro Suite (which has been occupied for two straight years) is inspired by conductor Herbert von Karajan.

The remaining rooms in the main house are decorated in traditional, autumnal reds and brushed gold, with plush fabrics and oak armoires, and are ideal for guests wanting a homey feel in the winter months. The cavernous, chocolate-colored hallways of the contemporary wings lead guests to sleek, minimalist rooms with white leather day beds and purple satin accents. Each suite boasts floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking either the city or the Dolder’s golf course. The heavenly views can be enjoyed from the private deck and the blissful bathtub equipped with Jacuzzi jets and enhanced by lighting one of the handmade candles. Rooms offer up-to-date technology: temperature, lighting, the television and room service requests can all be controlled from the in-room iPad.

Downtown Zurich is only a 15-minute drive from the property via complimentary Mercedes shuttle and the Dolder Grand offers plenty of activities to fill a weekend on property. Guests can schedule private tennis or golf lessons, spa treatments or an art tour around the hotel. The tour, which is self-led and conducted by iPad, takes about an hour, and includes biographies and analyses of over 100 works of art by Andy Warhol, Henry Moore, Salvador Dali and others. Those looking for a dose of Swiss mountain air may choose to explore the property’s hiking trails. Oenophiles should reserve a space at chef Heiko Nieder’s two-Michelin-starred The Restaurant—the Amuse-bouche lunch and Swiss wine pairing is particularly excellent.

The most indulgent spa in Zurich is located at the Dolder. The hotel’s renowned 4,000-square-meter wellness center includes a large fitness studio, sleek onyx swimming pool, infinity Jacuzzis, a solarium, salon and separate spas for men and women. Guests should allocate at least a half-day to enjoy the warm pebble bath, the spa’s signature La Prairie facial and a shiatsu massage complemented by special Dr. Burgener products exclusive to the Dolder spa. Personal training sessions, nutrition consultations and four-day detoxes are available and can be customized upon request.

The Widder's rooftop terrace.

Widder Hotel

Indicative of Zurich as a whole, the Widder marries contemporary and medieval architecture through thoughtful design. The 17-suite and 32-room hotel occupies a collection of nine historic townhouses along the famed Bahnofstrasse, located in the heart of the historical center. Each room has been individually appointed and decorated with respect to its historical framework—frescoes, beamed ceilings, antique tiled stoves and piled stone walls—while embracing sleek, modern design elements and cutting-edge technology.

Guests will enjoy Eames and Mies van der Rohe furnishings, terraces with garden views and displays of artworks by Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. An additional plus: Zurich’s best shopping and dining is only steps from the lobby.

Though the Widder is a boutique property, it offers five of the best dining experiences in the city, including AuGust, a rustic butchery for the adventurous carnivore. Here, Chef Daniel Käser presents approachable classics as well as more adventurous items like boiled beef and tripe salads. Gourmands adore the Widder restaurant, which is lead by Chef Tino Staub, who is best known for his use of high-quality regional produce and mastery of French and Far East flavors. The menu changes daily based on what is available locally. Turmstübliis one of the few fumoirs left in the smoke-free city. The Wirtschaft Zur Schtund, which is most popular among locals, specializes in traditional Swiss dishes such as fondue, raclette and rösti in a cozy farmhouse atmosphere.

The legendary Widder Bar, handsomely outfitted with red leather booths and 13th-century wooden beams offer guests over 1,000 bottles of liquor. Live jazz attracts a lively, diverse crowd most nights.
