Review

Accessible only by helicopter, this stylish chalet, perched on a nunatak in the middle of the Alaska Range, is a dream escape for active adventurers looking to unplug and connect with nature. Blending effortlessly into its untamed surroundings, Sheldon Chalet is not only a feat of engineering but also a comfortable and cozy space with modern furnishings and inviting common spaces, encouraging guests to relax and enjoy a book, listen to stories of Alaska’s renowned mountaineers and savor fine food and wine.

Sheldon Chalet provides an intimate immersion in nature without sacrificing creature comforts like excellent cuisine and well-appointed accommodations. There is a sitting and dining space on the first floor and just five bedrooms on the second. Alpine-chic décor complements the unobstructed mountain views from panoramic glass windows. Given its remote location and subsequent infrastructural challenges, the lodge has just two bathrooms shared between its five bedrooms, and there is neither WiFi nor cellphone service. While this may pose an obstacle for some, the property’s exclusive rights to the land allow guests to disconnect from the outside world and be wholly present in the unique Alaskan wilderness.

Guests can enjoy onsite activities with superb guides, including glacier trekking, crevasse exploring, mountain climbing, ice-cave spelunking, visiting a hidden Mastodon boneyard or flying through canyons and above dramatic peaks to enjoy a soak in a remote natural hot spring. The friendly and experienced mountain guides will tailor all excursions to guests’ needs, ensuring a one-of-a-kind experience. During certain months, it’s even possible to catch glimpses of the magical aurora borealis while sipping coffee on Sheldon Chalet’s elevated viewing platform.

Who Should Stay

Travelers looking for the most exclusive access to Mount Denali and a wow-factor lodge, but who are also willing to forego private bathrooms and cell and internet access.
