Review

Even those who steer clear of Victorian décor or cozy hotel common areas typically love Wentworth Mansion, because its charm is welcome and authentic rather than kitschy. Indeed, the lounge’s stained glass is original Tiffany; the lemonade in crystal pitchers is freshly squeezed every afternoon.

Built in 1886 as a private home for a family with thirteen kids, the five-floor mansion was converted to a hotel in 1996. Most rooms have fireplaces; all come with king-sized beds, marble bathrooms with separate showers and whirlpool baths. Some rooms (which range from 400 to 1,000 square feet) also have day beds and plenty of space for rollaway beds to accommodate children. Rooms are filled with tasteful Victorian dark wood furniture, heavy upholstery and velvet coronet canopied beds. Such thoughtful touches include a bag of Charleston peanuts next to the bed along with a note reading, If these make you thirsty, help yourself to a complimentary drink in the minibar.

The cupola on the fifth floor has a stunning outdoor terrace that is ideal for sunset viewing or for an after-dinner drink. The hotel’s fantastic restaurant, Circa 1886, serves dinner as well as a delicious breakfast in a converted carriage house.

Who Should Stay

Couples who don’t mind being a few blocks away from King Street and most shopping and dining options might appreciate feeling a bit removed.

From Indagare member who went on a Mother / Daughter trip to Charleston: “Wentworth Mansion was great for what we were doing and because i know Charleston so well. A little off the beaten path from the tourist area and shopping but great location for College of Charleston visiting. Small and quiet which we liked a lot. Excellent staff who remembered our names. Perfect for us. Not for those who prefer a full service hotel that feels super professional and busy. Lots of stairs but there is a small, slow elevator that would kill the charm a bit if you couldn’t do stairs. Cobblestone walkways too which would be hard for older folks. We loved the personal, homey, old Charleston feel but I can think of a few hedge fund managers who would not. Very authentic in an old house yet very clean with plumbing fixtures, plugs and AV equipment that worked well…sometimes those are compromised to get the true historical feel. Again, perfect for us.”
