Review

The charming Hermitage Hotel has prided itself on “preserving the region’s heritage and practicing the traditions that make hospitality synonymous with The South” since opening in 1910. Its commitment to southern geniality comes through the minute you enter the opulent two-story lobby, decked out with a stained glass ceiling and Grecian marble columns. Fires blaze in the winter, and complimentary lemonade and homemade cookies are available in the summer. The ornate setting is far from stuffy; everywhere in Nashville oozes casual hospitality, and the Hermitage is no different. Fires blaze in the winter, and complimentary lemonade and homemade cookies are available in the summer. The hotel's elegant furnishings and Old World atmosphere tends to attract an older crowd, and the lobby is often often teeming with important-looking men and women reading the paper and chatting.

Despite its downtown location, the hotel’s spacious 122 rooms are notably quiet, and while less extravagant than the lobby, they retain an elegant timelessness that traditionalists appreciate. All rooms feature 600-thread count Frette linens, pillow menus and plush Hypnos beds, which add to the indulgent experience at the hotel.

Nashville has an abundance of excellent dining options, including the hotel restaurant. The Capitol Grille (not affiliated with the national chain), helmed by Chef Tyler Brown, focuses on sustainable, locally grown produce. Chef Brown tends his own vegetable garden at the nearby Farm at Glen Leven. The dark-paneled Oak Bar, named one of the South’s best bars by Southern Living, is ideal for a nightcap.

Who Should Stay

For the luxury traveler seeking upscale accommodations and an attentive staff, the Hermitage is a great option. Traditionalists looking for a Southern establishment with a long history will feel at home.
