Review

Maison de la Luz is a design dream come to life. The hotel has a distinctive sense of place, channeling New Orleans’ old-world French Heritage with a nod to the world of secrecy and sorcery intertwined in the city's history. The interior décor is maximalist: expect plush velvet headboards, grand staircases, art covering the walls, and thought-provoking accents like brass snake shower handles and (real) oyster-shell soap dishes.

The 67-room property feels incredibly intimate and special, yet at the same time, grand and luxurious. Immediately upon walking through the front door of the hotel you experience this duality in design and hospitality: on the left is the grand staircase, leading up to the rooms, and on the right is the warm and welcoming staff.

The hotel is the passion project of the owners of the buzzy and much larger Ace Hotel (located next door), and is so packed with thoughtful details and accents that it feels more like you are entering a private residence. The two hotels are distinctly different, though there is a relationship of reciprocity, as guests can access amenities at both properties (like the gym at Ace, as Maison doesn’t have its own).

Maison’s Bar Marilou, however, is the perfect place for a Sazerac or a nightcap and feels particularly intimate. While the public is welcome at the restaurant, only hotel guests are allowed in the secret speakeasy. Enter behind a bookshelf in the bar and place your order by speaking to a bartender, who is located behind a piece of framed art.

The low-key, intimate vibe of Maison de la Luz attracts a travel-savvy crowd, high-end travelers and those who are in the know. It’s perfect for design lovers, boutique hotel lovers who want to soak up New Orleans’ soul and families with kids who don’t need a lot of space.
