New Orleans locals tend to avoid the tourist-packed streets of the historic French Quarter, but many will make an exception to dine at Mr. B’s Bistro, which commands a central location across from the picturesque Hotel Monteleone and its famed Carousel Bar. (My waiter, who has worked at the restaurant for nearly two decades, could easily point to multiple tables of locals enjoying their regular weekday lunches.) Opened in 1979 by members of the Brennan family—New Orleans restaurant royalty who also own such icons as Commander’s Palace and Brennan’s—Mr. B’s boasts a cozy, classic ambience fostered by the dark wood walls, hunter green leather banquettes and friendly, bow tie-clad wait staff. Executive Chef Michelle McRaney has been with the bistro for almost 30 years and consistently turns out flavorful Louisiana fare, such as two types of gumbo and the signature barbecued shrimp among an array of excellent meat and seafood dishes. Don’t miss the desserts, which include such tasty treats as Creole bread pudding with whiskey sauce, pecan pie and lemon ice box pie.
