Inn at Willow Grove Review

Nestled among the vineyards of Virginia’s Central Piedmont wine region, against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park, the Inn at Willow Grove is the kind of place where guests can settle in for a relaxing stay filled with quiet indulgences—dining on flavorful American cuisine, sampling local wines, enjoying a massage in the spa or simply sipping coffee on their private porch with only the sounds of their own rocking chair creaking.

Willow Grove’s history dates back to the Antebellum era. Acquired in 1778 by Joseph Clark (the land surveyor who assessed nearby Montpelier for First Lady Dolley Madison in 1844), Willow Grove was a working plantation for several decades. In 2010, after a multimillion-dollar renovation, Charlene and David Scibal opened the inn as a 10-room boutique property. (Charlene even curated the artwork and interior design herself, which features an “urban-meets-plantation style” of cozy, classic American décor paired with quirky nods to the surrounding countryside, such as a whimsical cow painting hung over a deep soaking tub.) The hotel has since grown to a total of 25 rooms, including suites and private cottages scattered throughout the grounds, but the intimate vibe remains. All rooms and cottages are different, and potential amenities include private balconies or porches, fireplaces, kitchenettes, wet bars and pullout sofas. Contact Indagare to find the best fit for you.

Serving three daily meals and a weekend brunch, the hotel’s 65-seat restaurant Vintage attracts a mix of local residents and guests with its changing menus of upscale American cuisine using ingredients from Central Virginia’s farmland (think hearty portions of steak, pork chops and seafood accompanied by a variety of seasonal sides). A recipient of a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, Vintage offers more than 30 bottles of local wines, while the adjoining pub serves craft beers and spirits alongside more casual bites. After dinner, guests can relax among the al fresco fire pits blazing just outside the restaurant.

The 3,000-square-foot Millhouse Spa comprises four tranquil treatment rooms, where guests can enjoy massages, scrubs, Elemis body and facial treatments, waxing and more; a relaxation room; steam showers; and a gym. The spa opens onto a small patio with a heated outdoor saltwater pool, surrounded by lounge chairs and offering poolside food and beverage service.

The staff members are warm and friendly, and the South’s famous hospitality is on full display here, from the welcome glass of Prosecco at reception to the turndown sweets and hot tea waiting upon your return from dinner. All the rooms also come with butler service to assist with everything from activity arrangements to unpacking your bags.

What To Do

The Inn has relationships with many of the historic sites and vineyards throughout the Virginia Foothills region and is able to arrange discounts or special experiences for its guests. History buffs should head to James Madison’s Montpelier: The 2,000-acre property, about 15 minutes from the hotel, was the fourth president’s former residence and plantation and currently offers tours through the house and grounds, as well as an exhibit on slavery in America and an active archeological dig on-site. Monticello—Thomas Jefferson’s former plantation with a museum and presidential library—is also located just 40 minutes away, in picturesque Charlottesville. Oenophiles will want to visit nearby Barboursville Vineyards, which ranks among Virginia’s most famous wineries. It’s known for its Octagon red Bordeaux blend and is open for public and private tastings. The Inn can also arrange a chauffeured multi-stop wine tour.

Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the region’s many activities, including kayaking, biking, canoeing, hot-air ballooning, golfing, fishing and horseback riding. Some of the local farms and markets also offer pick-your-own orchards, depending upon the season. Virginia’s spectacular Shenandoah National Park is located approximately 40 minutes from the Inn and is a popular spot for hiking (with more than 500 miles of trails), camping and scenic drives.

Who Should Stay

Though the Inn does accept children, its cozy atmosphere and culinary focus combine to create an ideal romantic bolthole. The hotel also accepts dogs.

Getting There

Amtrak services the Culpeper train station, located a 15-minute drive from the Inn, and the Charlottesville–Albemarle Airport is 40 minutes from the property. Indagare recommends renting a car in order to explore the region to the fullest. Approximate driving times to the Inn are 30 to 45 minutes from Charlottesville; 90 minutes from Richmond; and 90 to 120 minutes from Washington, D.C.

Note

The Inn accepts overnight stays from Wednesday through Sunday, and both the Inn and Vintage Restaurant are closed on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
