Bonaventure Cemetery

On grounds that were formerly part of the Bonaventure Plantation, this cemetery gained national fame when it appeared on the cover of John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The Bird Girl statue has since been moved to the Telfair Museum of Art for safekeeping. Among those buried here are songwriter Johnny Mercer and Pulitzer prize–winning poet Conrad Aiken. Aiken, who regularly visited the graves of his parents here, had his tombstone fashioned in the shape of a bench, so visitors can rest awhile and even raise a glass, as he did, to toast his party-loving mother. The stone is inscribed with the words “Cosmos Mariner, Destination Unknown,” which he apparently read one day on a ship’s log in town.

We are keenly aware of our past.” Ancestors who have been dead for decades are spoken of as though they just walked out the door, and ghost stories are related like recent newspaper articles, without a hint of irony or suspicion. So go ahead and connect with the past, indulge your spiritual side, and sign up for a ghost tour. It’s just another way of learning about the city’s history. Exterior View - Mercer Williams House,Savannah, American South

Mercer Williams House

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil made this the most famous house in Savannah, with its chronicle of the murder that took place here. Antiques dealer Jim Williams, who was ultimately acquitted, has since died, but the fascination with him and his house remains. A few years ago his sister opened the main floor of the house for visits. (She resides upstairs.) The focus is on the house’s history (it was built for a relative of songwriter Johnny Mercer) and the stunning collection of museum-quality antiques that Williams amassed, rather than on its sordid past. Tours are led by docents and advance tickets may be purchased online. The gift shop is worth a browse.

The house museum celebrates the artifacts that fill it and the tales of its former inhabitants’ lives. Tours begin in the slave quarters, which contain the country’s best-preserved original example of the blue ceiling paint that slaves used to ward off evil spirits. Admission fee includes access to architect Jay Whitney’s later landmark building, the Telfair Academy.

Savannah College of Art and Design

An Atlanta-based art teacher’s frustration led to the establishment of the largest art school in the country. The armory building on Bull Street that she and her parents purchased in 1978 to house the school’s first forty students is now home to shop SCAD, where the efforts of the creative community are offered for purchase. With its third location opening next year, in Hong Kong, SCAD now has 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students in Savannah and Atlanta and also runs an international program in Lacoste, France. The Savannah campus encompasses more than 60 buildings throughout the Historic District.

Paula Wallace, the private, nonprofit university’s president and cofounder, takes as her mission “no starving artists,” so the curriculum emphasizes commerce along with the arts. (Its official tagline is “SCAD prepares talented students for professional, creative careers.”) Fashion designers teach seminars, and Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley attends the end-of-year fashion show, presenting Lifetime Achievement Awards to designers like Vera Wang and Karl Lagerfeld. The industrial-design students work on sponsored projects for international companies that often put the pupils’ prototypes—like Baby Einstein toys and Hobie Cat kayaks—into production and hire them after graduation.

In addition to bringing an incredible pool of talent to Savannah, the university has restored dozens of old buildings. The library occupies a former department store, and an old riverside warehouse now houses the painting department. The next major project is an expansion of the SCAD museum in rehabilitated former rail yards, which will hold one of the world’s best collections of African-American art. Tours of campus are available through the college.

Newton, which include antique maps, editions of Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain and William Shakespeare and prints by Rembrandt, Goya and Renoir. The more than 4,5000 objects and paintings rotate.

Exterior View - Telfair Academy,Savannah, American South

Telfair Academy

The oldest museum of art in the South, the Telfair Academy is housed in a Regency building designed by Jay Whitney (who was also the architect of the Owens-Thomas House) that dominates Telfair Square. It is home to the Bird Girl statue appearing on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, as well as paintings by 19th-century American and European masters and temporary exhibits. The galleries were once the scene of grand Southern living, and remnants of this can be glimpsed in one room's hand-painted wallpaper, the outline of an indoor pool and a rustic kitchen in the basement as well as a lovely Regency interior bridge.
