Review

Upon opening in spring 2018, Perry Lane Hotel was an instant game-changer for Savannah’s hotel scene. The sophisticated property delivers the warm service expected in the “hostess city of the South,” an artistic flair that nods to its creative neighbor, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and a foodie focus befitting the city’s emergence as a culinary hotspot. Located in a residential section of the Historic District within walking distance of the main shopping streets, the riverfront and Forsyth Park, the hotel brings a hip Brooklyn ambiance to the Georgia coast, with its industrial-chic design elements and lively rooftop bar drawing a young crowd.

A part of The Luxury Collection, Perry Lane features upscale accommodations with Frette linens, flat-screen televisions with access to streaming platforms plus Byredo bath products. The friendly hospitality of the hotel staff feels akin to traditional Southern properties, but Perry Lane distinguishes itself with unexpected touches (like the elevator walls, which are decorated in an eye-catching animal print, or the vintage pinball machines that can be played in the ground-floor bar). The hotel houses approximately 3,000 decorative pieces curated by NINE dot ARTS and inspired by the life of Adelaide Harcourt, the fictional muse of the hotel, whose Savannah upbringing and global travels are reflected in the collection of objects that adorn the shelves and walls throughout the property—from teapots and typewriters to photographs and figurines. A small “destination amenity fee” covers a range of thoughtful perks for guests, including bike rentals, daily coffee, a cookie jar from local Byrd bakery and car service within a two-mile radius of the hotel.

Perry Lane is comprised of two separate buildings—both of which house guest rooms, common spaces and eateries—that are divided by the tiny Perry Street running between them. In addition to its 167 rooms, including 12 suites, the property encompasses an elegant lounge and library, and its public spaces often host events showcasing talented locals, such as musical performances, author talks or pop-up shops of Savannah-based brands. Several common areas also feature murals by local artists and SCAD alumni. Additionally, there is an Andie Kully boutique selling high-end resort wear, a fabulous rooftop pool with lounge chairs and a 24-hour gym in the basement. There is no spa, but the hotel can arrange in-room treatments from local partner Glow.

Food and wine play an integral part in the Perry Lane experience, and its restaurant and bars attract both guests and locals alike. (Only those staying at the hotel have access to the floors with guest rooms, but on weekends and evenings, you are often riding the elevator with revelers coming to and from the rooftop bar.) Adjacent to the lobby is the Market, which has a Bowerbird coffee bar, a gelato stand and a snack bar where guests can pick up sandwiches and other small snacks, as well as a basket and blanket for a picnic in a nearby square under the shade of the Spanish moss. The all-day restaurant, Emporium, which serves elevated regional fare with a French influence, is one of only a few restaurants in Savannah with a dedicated pastry chef (and one who served as an official baker at the Olympics in South Korea, to boot). Emporium’s wine bar has two sommeliers, and guests can also stop here to order wine to-go and take advantage of the open container policy in the surrounding Historic District. The Wayward, an evening cocktail bar with a vintage atmosphere, has a menu of hand-crafted drinks, a motorcycle suspended above the bar and several 1980s arcade games for nostalgic guests with quarters to spare. Capping off the hotel’s food and beverage offerings is Peregrin, a buzzy rooftop bar with tropical décor and lawn games like corn hole and bocce that has quickly become a local hotspot for its frozen cocktails, wine and beer.

Who Should Stay

Travelers to Savannah looking for stylish accommodations and an array of on-site amenities. There are several connecting room options for families, and the hotel also welcomes dogs.
