Bermuda’s historic grande dame property completed its massive, three-year renovation project in 2015, transforming the oldest hotel in Bermuda (it first opened in 1885) into a modern, sophisticated resort that maintains its classic Bermudian sensibility. Leading the push to put Bermuda back on the tourism radar, owners and brothers Andrew and Alexander Green spared no expense in upgrading the hotel to realize their vision, and it shows: the $100 million refurbishment has put the sparkle back in this old gem, which has been named the official host hotel for the America’s Cup in 2017.
The new guest rooms are bright and cheery, boasting lots of natural light and an island-inspired color palette (creams, blues and light accents) as well as modern, dark wood furniture and contemporary artwork. Modern art fills the common areas of the hotel, too, with pieces from Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Ai Weiwei, Jeff Koons, Nelson Mandela and Banksy scattered throughout the property.
The new Exhale spa offers a sanctuary where guests can invigorate or decompress as needed. The waterfront spa includes nine therapy rooms, a zen lounge, manicure and pedicure stations, a fitness center, an outdoor pool (adults-only) and a poolside yoga pavilion. The infinity pool (where children are allowed) has been updated and the marina has also been expanded—it is the only full-service marina in Bermuda—and offers more than 60 berths as well as some of the best views for enjoying America’s Cup racing (or for just watching the fish in the impossibly clear water). Also new to the property is a 7,000-sq.-ft. retail corridor, which includes high-end boutiques carrying international and local products, such as Astwood Dickinson jewelry and the official America’s Cup store.
The resort’s three restaurants give guests a variety of dining options. Intrepid is the signature restaurant, serving steak and seafood (with a raw bar as well). The harbor-side 1609 Bar & Restaurant offers yet another spot for guests to enjoy the waterfront views, which the open-air spot offers from every vantage point. Crown & Anchor has indoor and outdoor seating and serves everything from breakfast to cocktails to afternoon tea on the weekends.
The hotel does not have a beach (most properties in Bermuda do not), but the Princess Beach Club is an approximate 25-minute-drive away, and guests have access to complimentary beach jitney rides. The Hamilton Princess is also very close to the lively Front Street and its shops, restaurants and bars.
