Santa Barbara’s emerging Funk Zone, complete with art galleries, wine bars, microbreweries and tasting rooms from several local wineries, is the hottest new spot in town. And the anchor for the Funk Zone is The Lark. With a hip, industrial chic interior and an inventive yet unpretentious menu, the Lark is the Funk Zone’s natural gathering place. The chef celebrates the region’s seasonal, local bounty. His wintertime menu might include a snack of crispy Brussels sprouts with medjool dates, sesame and lime, or braised beef short rib with rainbow Swiss chard, savory root vegetables and green peppercorn bordelaise. The bar is open until midnight, mixing such artisanal cocktails as June Gloom (named for the coastal fog that alights in early summer), made with black rum and gingerbeer. The wine list features top selections from local wineries along with inspired international vintages.
