Indagare Loves

  • That each room has a kitchenette stocked with local wines, beers, kombucha and homemade ice cream in flavors such as fig and mint.
  • The exquisite breakfast, which is included in the room rate and puts standard room service to shame.
  • The rooftop garden, which is reserved for guests of the inn and restaurant and has beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Review

Located in the heart of Healdsburg in Sonoma County, SingleThread Farm is one of those rare hotels where the restaurant is the raison d’être—and not the other way around. It’s a lovely boutique inn, but the focus is as much on the kaiseki-style dinner that you have downstairs before retiring to one of the five bedrooms upstairs. In fact, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant, which has drawn comparisons to Napa’s French Laundry since its 2016 opening date, is what attracts most guests to SingleThread. Everything from the 11-course tasting menu to the simple-yet-luxe accommodations is a passion project for husband-and-wife owners Kyle and Katina Connaughton, who spent years dreaming this place up, and run a five-acre farm nearby on the banks of the Russian River. As a result of their madcap vision and obsessive commitment to the details, the ambitious property excels on every level.

The accommodations are comfortably minimalist, with redwood beams and exposed brick walls, and gas fireplaces, knit wool rugs and leather lounge chairs that make them cozy. Bathrooms are cosseting, with deep soaking tubs and fancy Japanese toilets. As with dinner at the restaurant, where each bite is served on custom-made dinnerware by a family of artisans that spans eight generations in Japan, every detail of the rooms have been considered, from the thoughtfully stocked kitchenettes equipped with a $400 state-of-the-art tea-brewing system, to the binchotan charcoal toothbrushes left for guests. While the common spaces are limited and there’s no fitness room or spa on-site, the hotel can organize spa treatments nearby and complimentary day passes to a local gym.

The highlight of any overnight stay, though, is almost certainly the memorable hotel breakfast. The English breakfast is an homage to Alice in Wonderland, and includes the "Mad Hatter's Toad in the Hole"—a piece of toast filled with ultra-fluffy scrambled eggs straight from the farm, served out of a whipped cream dispenser. It is whimsical, totally over-the-top and utterly delicious. It might be as extraordinary as dinner the night before.

Who Should Stay

Bay Area residents seeking an easy weekend getaway, foodies looking to include an epic meal into their wine-country pilgrimage, or families with well-behaved older children. While children over the age of 12 are accepted, the vibe is very quiet and adult.
