Review

For decades, White Elephant Nantucket has been one of the Indagare community's go-to properties on the island. For the brand’s second location, they turned south, to sunny Florida, where the White Elephant Palm Beach's 32 rooms add even more glamour to tony Palm Beach.

The hotel is on Sunrise Avenue, one block north from the Flagler Bridge to the mainland. While it's not directly on the water, it is only a five-minute walk (or easy two-minute bike ride) to the beach, and a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive (made all the more pleasant in one of the hotel's complimentary BMWs) to the shopping of Worth Avenue.

White Elephant Palm Beach occupies an historic 1920s Spanish Colonial-meets-Italianate-style four-story building. Inside, though, it's all new, and apart from a familiar white elephant statue out front, Nantucket loyalists won't recognize the Palm Beach's shinier design. Its marble lobby—chockablock with coral sculptures and bright, breezy contemporary art—makes for a striking entrance. Rooms, on floors two through four, are light, with pops of patterned fabrics on the chairs and headboards, but overall soothing (and suitably Palm Beachy). Several suites come with a shared balcony, and two king rooms have private balconies, although the lack of a divider between them means there isn't actually that much privacy. For families, the two three- and four-bedroom residences on the fourth floor both have full kitchens and massive outdoor terraces, large enough for a spacious lounging area, dining pergola and grill. All of the balconies face the courtyard, where the hotel's popular restaurant, Lola 41, draws the town's see-and-be-seen crowd for lunches and dinners under its striped umbrellas. (Also in the courtyard, tucked behind hedges between the restaurant and Sunrise Avenue, is the beautiful, though small, pool.)

Visits to the beach can easily be arranged with the concierge, who will set you up with chairs, towels an umbrella and a beach bag filled with goodies. They'll shuttle you there in one of the hotel's BMWs and pick you up whenever you're ready to return to Lola 41 for excellent cocktails and sushi.

Who Should Stay

Anyone coming to Palm Beach looking for a top luxury hotel as opposed to a pool-oriented resort. Guests have easy access to the beach, but the pool area is too small for all-day lounging.
