Hawaii - Big Island

Film

Blue Crush, John Stockwell, 2002 – For scenes of Oahu, this teen surf/romance movie might fill the bill. It is better than Blue Crush 2 (Mike Ellio, 2011), which went straight to DVD.

The Descendents, Alexander Payne, 2011 – George Clooney plays Oahu resident Matt King, whose wife suffers a serious boating accident. As he reexamines his past and tries to repair his relationship with his daughters, King must also decide what to do with land in Kauai owned by his family for generations. The dialogue and acting in this sad and funny film are excellent.

North Shore, William Phelps, 1987 – A wave tank surfer from Arizona heads to the North Shore of Hawaii and runs into trouble until he meets a guru who teaches him the real reasons to surf. He meets a cute local girl, too.

Soul Surfer, Sean McNamara, 2011 – This film recounts the true story of Bethany Hamilton, the professional surfer whose arm was bitten off by a shark at Kauai’s Tunnels Beach. It’s a B-movie, but the message is one of hope, and there are plenty of scenes of the north shore of Kauai.

Princess Kaiulani, Marc Forby, 2009 – Based on the true story of a Hawaiian princess who resisted colonization in the late 1800s. Much of the film takes place outside of Hawaii, in England and the U.S.
