Talk about getting away from it all. At the end of the fifty-two-mile Hana Highway, you’ll be rewarded with the seventy-room Hāna-Maui Resort. With no in-room televisions, radios, or clocks, it isn’t for everyone. Given its location that enjoys the refreshing trade winds, there’s no need for air conditioning either (and none installed). Those who want the flavor of old Hawaii will love it, particularly if they stay in the Sea Ranch cottages, which look out on the rough shoreline and are the best rooms to book. Accommodations are simple but have plush amenities, such as feather beds and white-oak floors. Spread over sixty-six acres, Hāna-Maui Resort provides a full spa, activities including horseback riding and tennis and an award-winning restaurant that gets the majority of its produce, fish and meat from Hawaii. For those who can’t handle the two- to three-hour drive to get there, Air Maui, Paragon Air and Sunshine Helicopter have plane and helicopter charters from Maui’s Kahului Airport and from Honolulu.

Who Should Stay

Anyone who wants a romantic getaway, far from the bustling beach resorts, will love it. Hāna-Maui Resort is geared towards adults, but kids are permitted in the family suites.

From an Indagare member: “Travaasa Hana was great, but is not for everyone. The property was relaxing and beautiful (we had perfect weather, no rain at all!). The food trucks nearby are awesome (not open on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday), while the food at the resort is fancy and expensive (but kids loved it). As far as caveats, the property does not seem to regulate the pool as it was often rowdy with groups and visitors who are not staying at the resort. Also, the wifi does not always work in the rooms.”
