The Teotihuacan Pyramids were first constructed in 300 BC as the original center of the ancient city. Later inhabited by the Aztecs, these mysterious and massive ruins were abandoned upon the formation of Mexico City. Today, this site (located 30 miles northeast of downtown) contains the third largest pyramid in the world. In order to fully experience the ruins, walk down the large Avenue of the Dead to the Sun Pyramid and the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl and climb the Moon Pyramid for spectacular views.

Inarguably the epicenter of Mexico City’s historical heritage, Zocalo refers to the main square that has been a gathering place for Mexicans since Aztec times. The surrounding neighborhood contains noteworthy sites such as the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption, the Palacio Nacional and the ruins of the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. The larger square is filled with great restaurants and shops.

A stunning metallic hourglass rising from the Nuevo Polanco plaza, the Soumaya Museum is an architectural marvel in its own right. The museum itself houses the vast private art collection of Mexican businessman Carlos Slim, and boasts a variety of artifacts and artworks from European Masters (alongside a few works by Diego Rivera). With a stark white interior, the museum leads guests to a spiraling walkway and grand salon that hosts rotating exhibits. If you cannot read Spanish, booking a guide for exploring this museum is well worth it, as English signage is limited. Soumaya Museum

Casa Azul, or the Blue House, is the birthplace and lifelong home of artist Frida Kahlo, and was transformed into a museum following her death in 1958. The house walls are covered with the artist’s evocative paintings and throughout are decorated with mementos of Kahlo’s life (including her easel and a collection of pre-Hispanic art). The entrance lines can be long, particularly on weekends, so be sure to pre-purchase your tickets online.

The former studio and home of the modernist architect Luis Barragan has been preserved to maintain its near perfect condition, and is today a remarkable and unique museum that highlights the work by a great architect. It is due to this preservation that your guide can explain the nuances of artistic intent with which Barragan designed his extraordinary home. Soaring ceilings filled with natural light contrast with narrow hallways illuminated by colorful stained glass, all with a gorgeous garden backdrop. The Four Seasons has been a staple of luxury in Mexico City since the 1990’s, and recent renovations ensure that the hotel is still one of the city’s best. Located downtown in the Paseo de la Reforma area, the Four Seasons is an oasis for travelers looking for an escape from the hectic city, while the central location is ideal for sightseeing.

With a simple and elegant exterior, the property has a quiet entrance and swanky, hip public spaces. Guests meet a small reception area and long hallway that opens to the hotel’s picturesque, verdant courtyard. A haven from the city’s noise, the garden is filled with intimate seating areas, and, come evening, is a lovely place to enjoy an aperitif while listening to live Spanish guitar.

Most of the rooms offer courtyard views and are designed with classic, clean lines styled with modern touches, such as dark wood French doors and abstract carpet designs. However, while accommodations are sleek and comfortable, the Four Seasons’ public spaces are the property’s main draw. In addition to the courtyard, guests enjoy the Fifty Mils Bar, which is a sizable space split into several nooks and as a result feels more like a private library than a hotel bar. Visitors should also be sure to check out the breakfast scene (in the hotel’s main restaurant), which draws a chic business crowd. Another perk of the property is the small outdoor pool, which, while family-friendly, is a lovely place relax for adults, too.

Located in the heart of the city’s chic business district, the St. Regis commands 13 floors of a 31-story tower designed by acclaimed urban architect Cesar Pelli. The central location overlooking the Glorieta de la Diania roundabout is ideal, as the property sits within walking distance of the Chapultepec Castle and the historic downtown Zocalo Square.

The hotel lobby, located on the 3rd floor of the building and furnished with plush light blue seating, is a luxurious retreat from the bustling square below. The St. Regis’ 189 rooms are spacious and full of light, boasting floor-to-ceiling windows and a modern and refined aesthetic (all rooms have a plush carpet, comfortable king-sized beds and large bathrooms with open plans). As is expected from the St. Regis, the rooms are equipped with the most up-to-date technology, including televisions in the bathrooms and multiple iPod docks.

The outstanding service is a true highlight of the property. Guests are greeted by cheery top hat–clad doorman, and every room comes with 24-hour butler service. Another draw is the hotel’s Remede Spa on the 15th floor. A true oasis from the city below, the spa boasts a lovely indoor pool and whirlpool with stunning views of the urban square. Next door there is also a modern and airy fitness center.
