Golf

Punta Mita boasts two Jack Nicklaus–designed courses. The par-72 Pacifico course opened in 1999 and is famous for its extra challenging Tail of the Whale hole, located on an island just offshore. The Bahía course, which has a hole on the beach, welcomed its first players in 2008. Be sure to book tee times early during high season, since both courses are extremely popular with guests in the area.

Guests who want to incorporate an educational adventure into a vacation should schedule a visit to this wildlife sanctuary, a twenty-minute boat ride from Punta Mita. Jacques Cousteau studied the many species of turtles, fish, dolphins and birds that make their home here. When the tide is low enough, snorkelers can enter an opening in the rock wall surrounding the island to discover a hidden beach.Take care when entering, as the currents can be strong—don’t even attempt this when the tide is high and the waves are rough. From the safety of your boat, look for the famous blue-footed boobies, the rare species mostly associated with the Galapagos

Sayulita

Once a dusty surfer town, Sayulita has transformed from a quiet expat enclave to a buzzing tourist hotspot, no doubt thanks to the eclectic boutiques and delicious restaurants that have set up shop in recent years. Located twenty minutes north of Punta Mita. Sayulita is an absolute must for those seeking a more bohemian alternative to Punta Mita’s groomed golf courses. Although popular year-round, Sayulita in the winter is a Mecca for surfers and a fun place for people watching over margaritas. Days are filled with inexpensive fish-taco lunches and afternoon surf sessions, while nights bring beach bonfires and reggae concerts. If you want to spend just a couple of hours exploring, have your hotel arrange for a driver to wait for you, since the local taxis, though safe, are not necessarily comfortable.

One of Punta Mita’s main draws is its great surfing. Beginner lessons are available at both the Four Seasons and the St. Regis; for less expensive options see the operations in the town of Punta de Mita or Sayulita.
